Community Engagement Through Extension and Outreach Activities

Extension and outreach services of libraries, archives, and museums (LAM) are to be essentially considered as an important aspect of social and ethical responsibility of an institution towards the society. An academic library, especially a college library, has immense scope for engagement of the community constituting the stakeholders of the institution for participation, involvement, skill development, and enrichment as well as the individuals outside the institution, ultimately towards inclusion, empathy, and compassion for the society at large. Exemplary evidences of the opportunities and accomplishments of a college library with special reference to the extension and outreach activities of Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya, Kolkata, West Bengal, India are provided. Innovation, collaboration, communication, creativity, and effective employment of ICT tools are the keys to successful execution.

Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) [formerly Tiny and Small Scale Industries (SSIs)] are recognized as the main contributors in socio-economic advancement of any country especially the developing one like India. But due to some controllable and/or uncontrollable factors, MSEs cannot get themselves free from sickness. Sickness in MSEs expands its steps in all states in India amongst which West Bengal (WB) is specially notable mainly due to the continuous degradation of Micro and Small Engineering Enterprises of the then Birmingham/Sheffield of the East, Howrah. In WB, Howrah is considered to be the most incipient sickness-prone district for MSEs. Government effort to locate the probable causes of sickness of MSEs has exposed that in India, lack of demand of the product of MSEs in market is the most sever one, while in WB, marketing problem holds the maximum severity, followed by lack of demand which is also partially due to the marketing problem. The present paper aims at identifying how far the major responsible causes in marketing related area are liable in bringing about sickness in Micro and Small Engineering Enterprises.

Academic Libraries nowadays have to relate all its activities to public and its users very often and keep them updated with the changes and Updation in the Library. In order to attract the users and sustain in this modern ICT world, the user’s complete satisfaction is the ultimatum. We are in a digital world where one need not physically go to the Library or a computer to get information they want. Just a swipe on their smart phone and they have their required information in their finger tips. They just require a device to login and an internet or Wi-Fi connection. That’s it. This study is about the marketing of information products and services among users of M. Kumarasamy College of Engineering, Karur. From this research it is found that the marketing of services has been a great challenge with limited budget as well as the emerging ICT tools and technology day by day. The study shows the user behavior, their awareness level, usage, usefulness & the marketing strategies used in the College Library for promoting their services. This paper also suggests that Librarians have to be proactive in marketing their information sources & services with the help of current marketing strategies using ICT which is the need of the hour.
