Mapping OWL-S Process Model to Timed Automata

The conversion of web services to semantic web comes the opportunity to automate various tasks. OWL-S plays a key role in describing web services behaviour. While ontology-based semantics given to OWL-S is structural rather than behaviourally oriented, we cannot automate an essential task in this field, verification. In this article, the mapping of OWL-S process model to Timed automata is investigated, which is a suitable formalism for real time systems modeling and automatic verification. Hence, this has led to not only enabling automatic verification but also covering problems related to automated verification of temporal quantitative properties as bounded liveness property. As a starting point, the OWL-S and sub entry of time ontologies for describing the timed behaviour of services has been chosen. A defined set of mapping rules is used to automatically encode control constructs defined in OWL-S and temporal information into timed automata. Also, it is shown how a Uppaal checker is used to check required properties formulated in TCTL. Finally, an EClinic case study is used to illustrate the technique.

UPPAAL is a tool suite for automatic verification of safety and<br />bounded liveness properties of real-time systems modeled as networks of timed automata<br />[12, 9, 4], developed during the past two years. In this paper, we summarize<br />the main features of UPPAAL in particular its various extensions developed in 1995<br />as well as applications to various case-studies, review and provide pointers to the<br />theoretical foundation.

Uppaal is a new tool suit for automatic verification of networks of<br />timed automata. In this paper we describe the diagnostic model-checking feature<br />of Uppaal and illustrates its usefulness through the debugging of (a version<br />of) the Philips Audio-Control Protocol. Together with a graphical interface of<br />Uppaal this diagnostic feature allows for a number of errors to be more easily<br />detected and corrected.

Purpose Business model innovation (BMI) provides enormous opportunities to multinational corporations (MNCs). Consequently, some MNCs have created dedicated BMI units. Yet, research only provides limited guidance and lacks empirical evidence on the implementation of BMI processes in a corporate environment through dedicated units. Accordingly, the main goal of the research is to shed light on understanding the role (s) of a dedicated BMI unit and how it interacts with the existing businesses to help them identify, evaluate or implement new business models. Design/methodology/approach This work adopts a case study approach as a research design (Yin, 2015). In particular, the study is set up as a single in-depth case study in a holistic design (Yin, 2013). The data consists of a total of nine extensive interviews with employees of Bosch’s BMI unit, as well as project team members the unit has worked with. Of the nine interviewees, six are working within the BMI unit (internal perspective) and three are members of two project teams, i.e. customers of the BMI unit (external perspective). Archival records serve as an additional source of evidence aimed at enhancing internal validity. Findings This research is the first work to determine the explicit roles of an MNC’s dedicated BMI unit throughout the BMI process. Through derivation of roles from the tasks and responsibilities of Bosch’s BMI unit in each process phase, six overarching roles have been identified, namely, process owner, executor, enabler, challenger, networker and connector. Simultaneously, this work has suggested the existence of process-independent roles, namely, knowledge intermediary and trainer. Research limitations/implications The case study approach underlying this work allowed an in-depth investigation of the BMI process and the BMI unit of Bosch but the results are still based on a single case study. In this regard, limitations that occur for qualitative case study approaches are also relevant for this study, i.e. although careful analysis to reveal the stage-gate such as the design of BMI processes or the roles of a dedicated BMI unit was performed, a certain degree of subjectivity remains. Practical implications The results underline that a dedicated BMI unit within an MNC constitutes a way to allow for managing the cross-functional and complex tasks of BMI by giving projects the necessary flexibility to develop while remaining aligned and benefitting from the organizational setting. This paper further observes that a dedicated BMI unit expresses an opportunity to define responsibilities for corporate BMI processes that are described in the literature (Geissdoerfer et al., 2017; Tesch, 2019; Wirtz and Daiser, 2018). Thus, the results may be used by practitioners working in MNCs to understand some of the issues related to the implementation of BMI processes in a corporate context, i.e. how to organize and structure BMI (Geissdoerfer et al., 2017; Winterhalter et al., 2017) or where to locate and how to interlink BMI with existing corporate functions (Chesbrough and Rosenbloom, 2002; Cortimiglia et al., 2016). Originality/value The outcomes of this work are twofold. First, building on existing literature, a process model for BMI through dedicated BMI units is proposed. Second, based on findings from the in-depth case study, eight overarching roles a BMI unit can hold have been identified. Thereby, this work constitutes a starting point for intensified research on the value and the implications of dedicated BMI units in the context of BMI and BMI processes.

Uppaal is a tool suite for automatic verification of safety and<br />bounded liveness properties of real-time systems modeled as networks of<br />timed automata. It includes: a graphical interface that supports graphical<br />and textual representations of networks of timed automata, and automatic<br />transformation from graphical representations to textual format,<br />a compiler that transforms a certain class of linear hybrid systems to<br />networks of timed automata, and a model-checker which is implemented<br />based on constraint-solving techniques. The evaluation and process risk assessment of (a) lignin precipitation from black liquor, and (b) the near-neutral hemicellulose pre-extraction for recovery boiler debottlenecking in an existing pulp mill is presented in Part I of this paper, which was published in the July 2012 issue of TAPPI Journal. In Part II, the economic assessment of the two biorefinery process options is presented and interpreted. A mill process model was developed using WinGEMS software and used for calculating the mass and energy balances. Investment costs, operating costs, and profitability of the two biorefinery options have been calculated using standard cost estimation methods. The results show that the two biorefinery options are profitable for the case study mill and effective at process debottlenecking. The after-tax internal rate of return (IRR) of the lignin precipitation process option was estimated to be 95%, while that of the hemicellulose pre-extraction process option was 28%. Sensitivity analysis showed that the after tax-IRR of the lignin precipitation process remains higher than that of the hemicellulose pre-extraction process option, for all changes in the selected sensitivity parameters. If we consider the after-tax IRR, as well as capital cost, as selection criteria, the results show that for the case study mill, the lignin precipitation process is more promising than the near-neutral hemicellulose pre-extraction process. However, the comparison between the two biorefinery options should include long-term evaluation criteria. The potential of high value-added products that could be produced from lignin in the case of the lignin precipitation process, or from ethanol and acetic acid in the case of the hemicellulose pre-extraction process, should also be considered in the selection of the most promising process option.

The I\O file system Read\Write operations are considered the most significant characteristics. Where, many researchers focus on their works on how to decrease the response time of I\O file system read\write operations. However, most articles concentrate on how to read\write content of the file in parallelism manner. Here in this paper, the author considers the parallelizing Read\Write whole file bytes not only its contents. A case study has been applied in order to make the idea more clear. It talks about two techniques of uploading\downloading files via Web Service. The first one is a traditional way where the files uploaded and downloaded serially. While the second one is uploaded\ downloaded files using Java thread in order to simulate parallelism technique. Java Netbeans 8.0.2 have been used as a programming environment to implement the Download\Upload files through Web Services. Validation results are also presented via using Mat-lab platform as benchmarks. The visualized figures of validation results are clearly clarifying that the second technique shows better response time in comparison to the traditional way.

AbstractThe chapter argues for a more nuanced and empirically based understanding of the discourse on law and socio-cultural norms in Old Icelandic literature on the grounds of a narratological reading of ‘Færeyinga saga’ as a case study. It has often been claimed that Icelandic sources express an ideal of freedom based on communality as guaranteed by the law. By contrast, ‘Færeyinga saga’ represents a cynical discourse on power politics that renders law as an invariable concept obsolete and works solely on the principle that ‘might is right’. This cynicism, however, is presented in a form that leaves the narrative open to interpretation, showing that regardless of its possible dating, narrative literature can serve as a starting point for social discussion. Consequently, the discourse on law in medieval Iceland must be perceived as more polyphonic than has been allowed for by previous unifying readings in scholarship.
