The 5•12 Wenchuan earthquake was in M8.0, Mianyang felt strongly. Majority of the buildings have varied at different degrees of damage, especially in masonry-frame structures, Which reinforcement cost much higher for repairing; The 1200 buildings in Mianyang city or it’s Suburbs were surveyed. The results showed: masonry suffered much heavier damage and masonry-frame of the mixed structure by designing, which damage were significantly lower than without seismic design. Realization of the earthquake will not be collapsed, and after a simple repair it can be used. Buildings that suffered heavy damage which combined with the relevant code requirements and research in the past, adopt specific measures for strengthening the houses.

This paper examines the damage of buildings with different structures in 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake to summarize the features of stress distribution and aseismatic performance and then presents the problems of the masonry building, frame and part of the frame structural buildings in the earthquake. The purpose is to put forward the series of technical strategies of anti-seismic design, which include the overall optimization, stiffness deployment and node strengthening economically and scientifically.

The seismic damage investigation data of 257 buildings in Qingchuan County during Wenchuan earthquake are statistically analyzed. The results indicate that the seismic damages of buildings with seismic design are obviously lower than those of buildings without seismic design, and the damages of the brick-wood structures are most severe, that of the bottom frame structures and masonry structures are second while that of the reinforced concrete frame structures are relatively slight.

All of our 20th-century information for the Levant Fracture and Dead Sea transform fault systems is for a qui- escent period in the seismicity. This is apparent when we consider earlier events which show that infi.equent earthquakes have occurred in the past along this system, an important consideration for the assessment of haz- ard and tectonics of the Middle East. One of these events was the earthquake of 1837 which caused heavy damage in Northem Israel and Southem Lebanon. This earthquake was a much larger event than earthquake catalogues indicate. We reckon it was a shallow, probably multiple event of magnitude greater than 7.0.

Under the excitation of large earthquake, structures enter into high nonlinear stage. Currently, Opensees, Perform-3d and Canny are used as the most popular nonlinear analysis procedures. The fiber model will be introduced firstly and the nonlinear analysis models in Canny are explained in detail. Then Canny2007 is used to conduct nonlinear time history analysis on a heavily damaged frame structure with interlayer in Dujiangyan during Wenchuan Earthquake. Analysis shows that the maximum inter-story drift appears between the interlayer and its upper layer, and the heavy damage agrees well with the results of damage investigation. By comparing the damage extent of frame structures with or without interlayer, it reveals that the seismic performance of RC frame structures without interlayer is obviously better than that of ones with interlayer.
