The Bioactivitiy of Essential Oil from Ailanthus altissima Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae) Bark on Lasioderma serricorne(Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae)

The essential oil was extracted by Soxhlet method with anhydrous diethyl ether from Ailanthus altissima Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae) bark, a traditional Chinese herbal plant, and its repellent and its fumigant activity was investigated against Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius)(Coleoptera: Anobiidae) adults. A. altissima bark oil had extremely strong repellent activity against L. serricorne adults with the percentage repellency 93.7, 87.8 and 76.1% after 24, 48, and 72 h exposure, respectively. A. altissima bark oil also possessed high fumigant activity against L. serricorne adults with the corrected percentage mortality 100% at 8 µL/L air within 48 h exposure.

ABSTRACT The rusty grain beetle, Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), is a major insect pest of stored products worldwide. In an effort to manage populations of C. ferrugineus in stored grains, the essential oil from Citrus reticulata Blanco peel was prepared by the Soxhlet method with anhydrous diethyl ether, and its contact activity, repellent activity, and fumigant activity were investigated against C. ferrugineus adults. C. reticulata peel essential oil had potent contact, repellent, and fumigant activity against C. ferrugineus adults, with activity significantly increasing with increasing exposure dosage during the same exposure time. Percent repellency values achieved >80.0% after 60 h of exposure. For contact toxicity, the corrected mortality of C. ferrugineus adults reached >99.0% after 48 h of exposure at the dosage of 2.0 μL/cm2. For fumigant toxicity, the corrected mortality of C. ferrugineus adults reached 89.0 and 100.0% at the dosages of 40 and 80 μL/L of air, respectively. These results suggest that the C. reticulata peel essential oil has strong potential for managing populations of C. ferrugineus in practice.

The aims of this research were to determine the chemical composition and insecticidal and repellent activities of theArtemisia mongolicaessential oil againstLasioderma serricorneand to isolate active constituents from the essential oil. The essential oil ofA. mongolicawas obtained by hydrodistillation and 36 components were identified with GC-MS. Eucalyptol (39.88%), (S)-cis-verbenol (14.93%), 4-terpineol (7.20%), (−)-camphor (6.02%), andα-terpineol (4.20%) were found to be major components. With a further isolation process, five constituents obtained from the essential oil were identified as eucalyptol, verbenol, 4-terpineol, camphor, andα-terpineol. In the progress of assay, it showed thatL. serricorneadults had different sensitivities to the crude essential oil and isolated constituents. 4-Terpineol exhibited strongest contact activity againstL. serricorne, showing the LD50value of 8.62 μg/adult. Moreover, camphor andα-terpineol showed stronger fumigant activity (LC50=2.91and 3.27 mg/L air, resp.) againstL. serricornethan crude essential oil and other constituents. In addition, the essential oil, eucalyptol, verbenol, andα-terpineol showed comparable repellency againstL. serricorneadults. The results indicate that the essential oil and isolated compounds have potential to provide more efficient and safer natural insecticides or repellents for control of insects in food and Chinese medicinal materials preservation.

Essential oils obtained from many plants showed various kinds of insecticidal properties; some of them have been considered as alternative insecticides for pest control. The present study was aimed at determining the chemical composition of the essential oil from the roots of Bupleurum bicaule Helm, as well as evaluating the contact and repellent activities of the oil and four identified compounds against Lasioderma serricorne and Liposcelis bostrychophila adults. The essential oil was extracted by hydrodistillation, and its components were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). 26 components were determined and the main compounds included trans-2-isopropylbicyclo[4.3.0]non-3-en-8-one (25.9%), 4,5-dimethyl-1,2,3,6,7,8,8a,8b-octahydrobiphenylene (23.5%), and 1,4-dimethoxy-2-tert-butylbenzene (4.3%). It was found that the essential oil exhibited contact toxicity against L. serricorne (LD50 = 11.91 μg/adult), but the contact toxicity against L. bostrychophila could not be observed. The essential oil also showed strong repellent activity against L. serricorne with percent repellency of 100% at 78.63 nl/cm2. Four chemical compounds, 1,4-dimethoxy-2-tert-butylbenzene, bornyl acetate, (2E,4E)-2,4-nonadienal, and β-bisabolene, exhibited various levels of bioactivities. The experimental results indicated that the essential oil of B. bicaule and its individual compounds could be used in insecticidal and repellent strategies for stored product insects.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to assess the effects of the essential oil of Croton pulegiodorus Baill on eight populations of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky with different patterns of susceptibility to synthetic insecticides. Populations of S. zeamais were obtained from Sete Lagoas-MG, Jacarezinho-PR, Bom Conselho-PE, Garanhuns-PE, Jupi-PE, Lajedo-PE, São João-PE and Serra Talhada-PE. To estimate the lethal concentrations (LC50 and LC90) of oil for each population, fumigation tests were performed. The susceptibility of S. zeamais to the essential oil varied among populations. Garanhuns and Bom Conselho was considered the susceptibility patterns, presenting the lowest LC50 (3.40 μL L-1 of air) and LC90 (9.60 μL L-1 of air) for the essential oil, respectively. The population from Jupi exhibited the highest LC50 (14.49 μL L-1 of air) and LC90 (19.60 μL L-1 of air) for C. pulegiodorus. The resistance ratio ranged from 1.84 for the São João to 4.26 for the Jupi population. Thus, the essential oil of C. pulegiodorus showed fumigant activity, causing mortality in all S. zeamais populations used.
