Characteristics of Heavy Metals Contamination and Distribution in Shooting Range: A Case Study

In order to study heavy metals’ pollution characteristics in soil of a small arms shooting range, soil samples at surfaces and different depths were collected from a shooting range located in suburb of Beijing and analyzed for heavy metals (Pb、Cd、Cu、Zn、P、As、Hg and Sb). Site investigation results showed that the soil in the shooting range was seriously polluted by Pb bullets, and there are positive correlations between total concentrations of Hg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb and Pb in soil particles less than 2mm, indicating soil heavy metals’ combined pollution characteristics.

This paper was seleced Qingyuan as a case study, in order to analyze Hg, As, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr concentrations of the soil samples. And used the Hakanson potential ecological risk index method to assess the potential ecological risks of concentrations of heavy metals in soil. The results shows that the average concentration of Hg, As, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr in soil is 6.45, 0.26, 20.25, 119.11, 181.67, 189.22, 0.27, 32.92, 201.35 mg•kg-1 respectively. The rank by severity of ecological risk as Hg > Cu > Pb > As > Cr > Cd > Ni > Zn, based on their single-element indexes. Heavy metals in several samples of the soil have posed a serious threat on the ecosystem.

Heightened anthropogenic activities at the study site necessitated this investigation on soil quality. A transect soil survey technique was used to link sampled points from an open dumpsite towards the river valley. Three minipedons were dug and sampled per location and collected samples were used for various laboratory analyses. Results showed that soils of the dumpsite (OB1) had the highest soil quality morphological index (SQMI) value of 3.82, indicating best quality while the least SQMI was found in the ranch (SQMI = 1.27). The SQMI had significant correlations with OM (organic matter) (r=0.82; p=0.001; n=72), clay (r=65; p=0.01; n=72), pH(r=0.58; p=0.01; n=72) and bulk density (r=0.71; p=0.05; p=0.05; n=72). Although there were positive correlations between SQMI and copper and cadmium, heavy metals were poor predictors of SQMI, indicating that soil quality evaluation by SQMI assesses mainly soil physical fertility.
