According to the requirement to the pilot mill for the cold rolling process research work, new type pilot reverse cold rolling mill is designed. Computer control system, including primary automation system, process automation system and human machine interface (HMI) system, is developed for this mill. Technological control function such as electric position control, hydraulic tension control, automatic gauge control (AGC), and process control functions such as model setup calculation, process tracking, actual data treatment are realized. This new type pilot cold rolling mill has been used successfully in several iron steel companies.

Active disturbance rejection controller (ADRC) instead of the conventional PID controller in the hydraulic position control system is proposed to satisfy high accuracy and speed requirements in cold rolling mill. Based on the simplified model, frequency-domain analysis of the two kinds of controllers is performed. The results show that ADRC produces better performances, such as bandwidth, stability margins. Because of the extended state observer (ESO) that can estimate and compensate the tracking system in real time, ADRC reduces the dependence on accurate mathematical model, improves anti-disturbance capability of the system, and maintains good dynamic characteristics. The simulation results verified the effect of the conclusion.

It uses data from diverse sources which can be validated against each other and combined to produce a rich picture of the current risk control system and its shortcomings. The paper also describes the proposed improvements and what the plant chose to implement. This step also throws light on the culture of the plant.

Pilot cold rolling mill is the important tool for the cold rolling process researching and new steel grade development. According to the design of the new type direct pulling pilot cold rolling mill, based on the mass flow constant principle, strip exit thickness indirect measurement method is studied. During rolling, strip entry and exit speed can be calculated accurately according to the measured value of two sides’ clamps movement. Data filtering treatment is adopted and program flow chart is designed. Based on the material entry thickness measured manually, exit thickness of all passes can be measured indirectly. This thickness indirect measurement method has been applied successfully on the new type pilot cold rolling mill, and the measurement results show that this method has a good accuracy.

This paper focuses on a new type of 8-roll cold rolling mill with the back-up bearing roll. Compared to the traditional 6-roll cold rolling mill, a thick-walled bearing roll is used to multi-support the intermediate roll. By the rack, the fan-shaped gears, the eccentric core shaft and the servo-cylinder, the work roll can be pushed down by this screw down device on the top of the mill; By contrast with the 4(6)-roll mill, this type of mill has some characteristics, such as: the small size of rolls, lighter weight, the fast response for the screw down. The bearing roll is fixed by the supporting blocks placed on the rolling-mill housing. So this mill has large traverse rigidity, and this is propitious to the flatness control. By different means of strip flatness adjustments, such as the intermediate roll shifting, the roll bending and the bearing roll adjusting, the strip flatness can be well controlled. The oil-gas lubrication is used in the bearings of the bearing rolls, and the changing rolls equipment is designed for this type of mill too. A series of this type of mills (as 450, 800, 1250, 1450 series) have been produced since it was developed in 1997. The mills for 1250 and 1450 series have been applied in five-stand cold rolling mill and single stand reversing mill, a rolling speed of 800m/min has been achieved.
