Con el objetivo de examinar el papel que juegan las especies vegetales como fuentes alimenticias en la selección de frutos de agentes dispersores (Alouatta pigra, Ateles geoffroyi y murciélagos frugívoros), se realizó un estudio en selvas secas en el sureste de Yucatán, México. Se registraron los frutos consumidos por murciélagos usando colectores y, en el caso de los monos, se implementó el método de animal focal. El número de frutos consumidos registrados para ambas especies de primates y murciélagos fueron 342 y 386, respectivamente. Se determinó que los murciélagos depositaron frutos con pequeñas cantidades de pulpa, mientras que los monos contribuyeron mayormente con frutos totalmente despulpados (contrastes por pares LSD p < 0.05). Entre la variedad de especies de frutos en la dieta de los primates se detectó que A. pigra eligió frutos de las especies menos abundantes como Enterolobium cyclocarpum Jacq. Griseb. (1860) en vez de aquellas más abundantes (Manilkara zapota (L.) P. Royen (1953) y Brosimum alicastrum Sw. subsp. alicastrum C.C. Berg (1972)). El tipo de manejo de frutos y semillas causado por los primates sería más beneficioso para la germinación de las semillas que los aplicados por los murciélagos. Además, esta elección y manejo del fruto podría depender de sus características y la disponibilidad espacio-temporal de las especies de plantas como fuente de alimento.

Abstract The spider monkey, a fruit specialist and important seed dispersal agent in the Neotropics, is an endangered primate due to habitat loss, hunting and the pet trade. Spider monkeys have been the subject of a few studies in Central and South America, but little is known about the diet and ranging for this primate in southern Mexico. Here we report the results of a six-month long study (October 2010 to March 2011) of the feeding preferences and ranging patterns of the Yucatan spider monkey Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis living in the “Ya´ax´che” reserve by the Caribbean coast in northeast Yucatan peninsula. Focal animal and scan sampling as well as GPS tracking were used to document spider monkey feeding behavior, location of food trees and ranging in the reserve. The spider monkeys used 36 species of plants (94% trees; n = 432) and six non tree morphospecies as a source of food. Six tree species accounted for ≥80% of total feeding time and for 74% of all trees used. Fruits accounted for 59% of total feeding time, followed by leaves (35%), palm piths (5%) and other plant parts (1%). Total range used by the monkeys was estimated at 43% of semievergreen rainforest habitat available (ca 40ha). Range use was not random with segments showing light, moderate and heavy use; the use of different areas of their range varied monthly and was closely linked to the spatial dispersion of the trees used for food.

SUMMARYWest Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne neurotropic viral pathogen maintained in an enzootic cycle between mosquitoes (vectors) and birds (natural hosts) with equids, humans, and other vertebrates acting as dead-end hosts. WNV activity in Mexico has been reported in several domestic and wild fauna and in humans, and the virus has been isolated from birds, mosquitoes, and humans. However, no serological studies have been conducted in monkeys, and only two in a limited number of crocodiles (Crocodylus moreletii). Here we present data on the prevalence of neutralizing antibodies against WNV in 53 healthy wild monkeys (49 Ateles geoffroyi and four Alouatta pigra), and 80 semi-captive healthy crocodiles (60 C. acutus and 20 C. acutus–C. moreletti hybrids) sampled during 2012. None of the monkey sera neutralized WNV, whereas 55% of the crocodile sera presented neutralizing antibodies against WNV. These results can contribute to the design of surveillance programmes in Mexico.

In the course of several 21-cm observing programmes being carried out by the Leiden Observatory with the 25-meter telescope at Dwingeloo, a fairly complete, though inhomogeneous, survey of the regionl11= 0° to 66° at low galactic latitudes is becoming available. The essential data on this survey are presented in Table 1. Oort (1967) has given a preliminary report on the first and third investigations. The third is discussed briefly by Kerr in his introductory lecture on the galactic centre region (Paper 42). Burton (1966) has published provisional results of the fifth investigation, and I have discussed the sixth in Paper 19. All of the observations listed in the table have been completed, but we plan to extend investigation 3 to a much finer grid of positions.
