Aim: The aim of present study was to compare cyclic fatigue resistance of three modern Ni-Ti instruments used with continuous rotation. Materials and methods: For this study 3 groups of rotating instruments with continuous rotation (HyFlex EDM, Twisted File Adaptive, Revo S SU) have been used, each group consisted of 20 files. The various groups were subjected to cyclic fatigue testing through an artificial metal device. A statistical analysis with Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test was performed. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the three groups. The HyFlex EDM instruments have a fracture resistance slightly higher than the Twisted file and far higher than Revo S SU. Conclusions: Modern Ni-Ti alloys increase resistance of the rotating instruments to cyclic fatigue.

Aim: To evaluate the fracture resistance to cyclic fatigue of One Curve (Micro-Mega, Besancon, Cedex, France), One Shape (Micro-Mega), 2Shape (Micro-Mega) and EdgeFile X3 (EdgeEndo, Albuquerque, NM) files in simulated root canals. Methodology: One hundred and sixty nickel-titanium endodontic files were tested in simulated canals with single and s-shaped (double) curvatures. The One Curve (25/.06), One Shape (25/.06), 2Shape (25/.06) and EdgeFile X3 (25/.06) files were assessed (n=20 for each test). All the files were rotated up to fracture occurred. The number of cycles to fracture (NCF) was determined and also, the length of the fractured file part was measured. For statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance and Tukey HSD tests were used (p < 0.05).   Results: NCF for all instrument groups were significantly higher in the single curvature canal compared to the s-shaped curvature canal (p < 0.05). The EdgeFile X3 had the highest fatigue resistance in both curvature groups. The NCF of the One Curve were higher than that of the One Shape and 2Shape files (p < 0.05). In the s-shaped curvature canal, the files inclined to fracture more often in the apical curvature compared to the coronal curvature. There was no statistically considerable difference in the length of the fractured parts among the four experiment groups in either the single or s-shaped canal curvatures (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, fracture resistance to cyclic fatigue was the highest for the EdgeFile X3 group followed by the One Curve group and lowest for the 2Shape and One Shape group.   How to cite this article: Adıgüzel M, Öztekin F. Background. This study was conducted to compare the cyclic fatigue resistance of VDW.ROTATE,TruNatomy Prime, HyFlex CM, and 2Shape nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments in doublecurvedcanals in a simulated clinical environment. Methods. Eighty NiTi files were used for the fatigue testing in stainless steel canals compatible withinstrument sizes until fracture occurred (n=20): VDW.ROTATE (04./25#), TruNatomy Prime (04./26#),HyFlex CM (04./25#) and 2Shape TS04./25#( 1). For each instrument, the number of cycles to fracture(NCF) was calculated, and the fractured fragment length (FL) was measured. To verify that the fileswere fractured due to cyclic fatigue, the fractured surfaces of the files were evaluated under a scanningelectron microscope. Data were statistically analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis and Student’s t-tests atthe %95 confidence level. Results. The failure of the files due to cyclic fatigue was first seen in the apical curvature before thecoronal curvature (P<0.05). The highest fatigue resistance was observed in VDW.ROTATE and HyFlexCM files in both curvatures (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the fatigue resistancebetween the HyFlex CM and VDW.ROTATE files or between the 2Shape and the TruNatomy files(P>0.05). There was no difference in the fractured lengths of the files between the apical and coronalcurvatures (P>0.05). Conclusion. In artificial S-shaped root canals, VDW.ROTATE and HyFlex CM files exhibited higherfatigue resistance compared to 2Shape and TruNatomy files.

ABSTRACT Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the role of cross section on cyclic fatigue resistance of One Shape, Revo-S SU, and Mtwo rotary files in continuous rotation and reciprocating motion in dynamic testing model. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 new rotary One Shape, Revo-S SU, and Mtwo files (ISO size 25, taper 0.06, length 25 mm) were subjected to continuous rotation or reciprocating motion. A cyclic fatigue testing device was fabricated with 60° angle of curvature and 5 mm radius. The dynamic testing of these files was performed using an electric motor which permitted the reproduction of pecking motion. All instruments were rotated or reciprocated until fracture occurred. The time taken for each instrument to fracture was recorded. All the fractured files were analyzed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to detect the mode of fracture. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's honestly significant difference post hoc test. Results: The time taken for instruments in reciprocating motion to fail under cyclic loading was significantly longer when compared with groups in continuous rotary motion. There was a statistically significant difference between Mtwo rotary and the other two groups in both continuous and reciprocating motion. One Shape rotary files recorded significantly longer duration to fracture resistance when compared with Revo-S SU files in both continuous and reciprocating motion. SEM observations showed that the instruments of all groups had undergone a ductile mode of fracture. Conclusion: Reciprocating motion improved the cyclic fatigue resistance of all tested groups.
