Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare spindle cell neoplasm mainly originated in the pleural cavity. We report here an unusual case of a large SFT in the retroperitoneum. A 27-year-old female complaining of a palpable mass in the right flank with dull pain was admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of right retroperitoneal tumor. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a large retroperitoneal tumor arising from latissimus dorsi muscle. Surgical findings revealed a partly encapsulated tumor and complete resection of tumor concomitantly with right kidney, 11th and 12th ribs, and diaphragm was performed. Pathological examination demonstrated the tumor to be composed of increased mitotic activity and cellularity of spindle cells with a collagenous matrix. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for CD34, vimentin, and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and negative for CD31, cytokeratin, desmin, S-100p, smooth muscle actin, Bc1-2, and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) with Ki-67 labeling index of 0.1%. Based on pathological features, diagnosis of SFT in the retroperitoneum was confirmed. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an SFT arising from latissimus dorsi muscle and it is important to include SFT in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal tumors that caused considerable diagnostic problems due to its unusual site of origin.

Abstract We report on a large, retroperitoneal, malignant, solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) with high proliferation activity. A 43-year-old man was admitted to our department complaining of a palpable mass. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large retroperitoneal tumor occupying the entire abdominal cavity. A laparotomy was performed for diagnosis and treatment, which revealed a tumor in the retroperitoneum but with no invasion to the surrounding organs, thereby allowing safe macroscopic excision. Histologically, the tumor was composed of spindle-shaped cells with patternless pattern and a hemangiopericytomatous appearance. Moreover, immunohistochemical staining was positive for CD34, vimentin, Bcl-2, and CD99 and negative for desmin, S-100p, and smooth muscle actin (AMA). The tumor exhibited high cellularity, moderate mitotic activity, pleomorphism, necrosis, and hemorrhagic changes. In addition, the Ki-67 labeling index was 37%. These findings confirmed the diagnosis of malignant SFT with high proliferation activity. Subsequently, adjuvant doxorubicin plus ifosfamide chemotherapy was performed. No signs of recurrence were observed 12 months after the surgery.

Satellite cell activity was examined in the stretch-enlarge anterior latissimus dorsi muscle (ALD) of the adult quail. Thirty-seven birds had a weight equal to 10% of their body mass attached to one wing while the contralateral wing served as an intra-animal control. At various time intervals after application of the wing weight (from 1 to 30 days), the birds were injected with tritiated thymidine and killed 1 h later. Stretched muscle length was greater by day 1 and mass by day 3 when compared with the contralateral muscle. Satellite cells actively synthesizing DNA were quantitated in fiber segments of the control and stretched ALD. A minimum of 1,500 muscle nuclei (satellite cell nuclei and myonuclei) were counted in each muscle. Labeling in stretched muscle was expressed by the percent labeled nuclei per total nuclei counted. Satellite cell labeling was initiated by day 1, peaked between days 3 and 7, and was not statistically different from control values at day 30. These results demonstrate that satellite cells are induced to enter the cell cycle in the stretch-enlarged ALD muscle from the adult quail, and the peak of proliferative activity is within the first week of stretch.
