In this study, aged Co–Mo (3:10) alloy film has been demonstrated as an efficient and durable catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic solution. The Co–Mo alloy films with varying Co/Mo atomic ratios have been deposited by magnetron sputtering. The catalytic activity of Mo film is outperformed by the Co–Mo alloys, among which the Co–Mo (3:10) alloy exhibits the highest HER activity with an overpotential of 310 mV at 10 mA cm[Formula: see text] current density, exchange current density of 1.74 × 10[Formula: see text] A cm[Formula: see text] and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec[Formula: see text]. Combined with the good stability provided by the surface oxide layer, the aged Co–Mo (3:10) alloy is a promising catalyst for HER in acidic solutions.

Abstract Most fundamental studies of electrocatalysis are based on the experimental and simulation results obtained for bulk model materials. Some of these mechanistic understandings are inapplicable for more active nanostructured electrocatalysts. Herein, considering the simplest and most typical electrocatalytic process, the hydrogen evolution reaction, an alternative reaction mechanism is proposed for nanomaterials based on the identification of a new intermediate, which differs from those commonly known for the bulk counterparts. In-situ Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical thermal/kinetic measurements were conducted on a series of nanomaterials under different conditions. In high-pH electrolytes with negligible hydronium (H3O+) concentration in bulk phase, massive H3O+ intermediates are found generating on the catalytic surface during water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption processes. These H3O+ intermediates create a unique acid-like local reaction environment on nanostructured catalytic surfaces and cut the energy barrier of the overall reaction. Such phenomena on nanostructured electrocatalysts explain their widely observed anomalously high activity under high-pH conditions.

Influence of surfactants on the corrosion properties of chromium-free electroless nickel deposit were investigated on AZ91D magnesium alloy. The corrosion tests were carried out by immersion test (1 M HCl) and electrochemical polarization test (3.5 wt% NaCl ). The surfactants in the electroless nickel bath increases the corrosion resistance properties of the deposit on the magnesium alloy. In addition, smoothness and amorphous plus nano-crystalline phase were increased and accounted for the significant corrosion resistance. As a consequence, the corrosion potential moved towards the positive direction and the corrosion current density decreased. The immersion tests also provided the same trend as that of electrochemical polarization test. On the whole, the study concluded that corrosion resistance was enhanced by including a surfactant in the electroless deposits on magnesium alloy.
