1000 Grain Weight

Harmil is a new soft white winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar well adapted to southwestern Ontario. It has high yield, medium height, strong straw, low grain and flour protein, and low 1000-grain weight. It is moderately susceptible to leaf and head diseases, but it is the only cultivar available for the area that is resistant to the two prevalent races of loose smut (Ustilago tritici). AC Crystal is a red-seeded spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). In combining high grain yield and resistance to prevalent races of common bunt in a semidwarf, photoperiod-insensitive background it is similar to AC Taber. It has improvements relative to AC Taber: resistance to prevalent races of loose smut, except race T9, and stronger gluten properties. AC Crystal has improved resistance to leaf spots compared to Neepawa, AC Karma, and AC Foremost. It is eligible for grades of the Canada Prairie Spring (Red) wheat class. AC Foremost, red-seeded spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), combines high grain yield with resistance to prevalent races of common bunt (caused by Tilletia laevis Kuhn in Rabenh. and T. caries (DC.) Tul. & C. Tul.), and loose smut except T9 (caused by Ustilago tritici (Pers.) Rostr. in a semidwarf, photoperiod insensitive background. AC Foremost has improved pre-harvest sprouting tolerance compared with Biggar, AC Taber, and Genesis; improved resistance to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia recondita Roberg ex Desmaz.) and leaf spots (caused by Septoria spp. and Pyrenophora tritici repentis (Died.) Drechs.) compared with Neepawa and Biggar, and earlier maturity compared with Biggar, AC Taber, and Genesis. AC Foremost is eligible for grades of the Canada Prairie Spring (Red) wheat class. CDC Osprey is a high-yielding, lodging-resistant, semidwarf winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with good winterhardiness. CDC Osprey has excellent grain quality. It has a grain protein concentration that is similar to Norstar combined with the superior agronomic performance of CDC Kestrel in Alberta and Saskatchewan. However, more susceptible rust reactions and lower grain yields than CDC Kestrel may limit the production of CDC Osprey in southeastern Manitoba. Karat is a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) with bread making quality, high grain yield, and adequate straw strength. It is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew (caused by Erysiphe graminis D.C. ex. Above, a hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.), is adapted for dryland production in the west central Great Plains of the United States. It carries a nontransgenic source of tolerance to imidazolinone herbicides derived by mutation induction with sodium azide. Above was developed cooperatively by the Colorado and Texas Agricultural Experiment Stations and released to seed producers in September 2001.
