AC Graze, tested as Syn-A, is a late-maturing forage-type tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) cultivar. It was developed by mass selection for vigor, persistence, leafiness and uniform maturity at the Plant Research Centre, Agriculture Canada, Ottawa. AC Graze yielded 105.3% of the test mean (seven cultivar, six station years) in Ontario Forage Crop Committee trials. Key words: Tall fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb.

AC Nordic is a late-maturing orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) cultivar. It was developed by mass selection for yield, persistence and resistance to stem rust (Puccinia graminis) at the Plant Research Centre, Agriculture Canada, Ottawa. Its yield was similar to that of cv. Sumas in a total of 33 station years in Quebec. Yield in second and subsequent production years was 101.6% of cv. Sumas over 19 station years. Bruce birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) is a 71-clone synthetic variety developed at the Nappan Research Farm, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Nappan, Nova Scotia. Bruce was developed through two cycles of mass selection for plant vigour (top and root growth) and winterhardiness, and one cycle of mass selection for re-growth vigour under grazing. In Atlantic Canada, Bruce produced more forage than the check cultivar Leo during 3 post-seeding years. It was also superior in spring growth with high first-cut herbage yields. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is represented in Argentina by adapted populations of the continental morphotype, which are long persistent. It is the main perennial forage species cultivated in the temperate region of the country, producing forage for extensive grazing. The development of fescue plant breeding and its contribution to the achievement of higher productivity and better nutritional value with modern synthetic cultivars was the aim of this project. The characters considered were: adaptation and persistence in adverse environments, digestibility, leaf softness and tolerance to rust. The most representative cultivars of the stages and selection criteria considered in this work were: Pergamino El Palenque MAG, Palenque Plus INTA, Brava INTA, Baguala and Luján INTA. Farmers are aware of the increasing amount of information comparing alternative cultivars in dry environments in New Zealand. Animal production data in cool moist environments was unknown. To compare relative animal performance six different grasses were sown with Grasslands Tahora white clover (Trifolium repens L.) in 0.25 ha plots in two replicates in December 1988 at the Gore Research Centre in Southland. The six grasses were Grasslands Nui perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), Grasslands Roa tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea L)., Grasslands Kara cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L). Grasslands Matua prairie grass (Bromus willdenowii Ku&), Grasslands Hakari upland bmme (Bromus sitchensis), and Grasslands Kahu timothy (Phleum pratense L). These pastures were rotationally grazed with goats through spring and summer of the following two years; 2-weekly liveweight gain of 10 goats was recorded. Stocking rate was estimated from the addition of extra goats each week to achieve a residual pasture height of 100 mm. Spring liveweight gains (mid Sept-late Nov) were greatest on timothy and least on prairie grass. Stocking rate in spring was highest on the upland brome and tall fescue pastures and lowest for prairie grass and timothy pastures. Prairie grass pastures produced less total liveweight gain per ha than the other pastures. During summer, goat liveweight gains were ranked similarly to spring. Stocking rates were greatest on upland brome, and lowest on tall fescue. Total liveweight gain per ha in summer was greatest on the timothy pastures and least on prairie grass pastures. Developing leaf blades of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were subjected to three treatments that modify their source capacity: (1) emerged tips cut daily, (2) grown in darkness or (3) grown at the CO2 compensation point. Treated and control leaves developed similarly but treated leaves senesced rapidly at the leaf tip. Reduction of carbon availability in developing tall fescue leaf blades seems not to penalize normal blade development but does reduce the lifespan of mature leaves. Foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum L.) is a troublesome weed in irrigated pastures. Several grass species seeded on two irrigated pastures at Lethbridge to test their ability to compete with foxtail barley. Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and creeping foxtail (Alopecurus arundinaceus Poir) reduced foxtail barley groundcover significantly compared to orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), pubescent wheatgrass (Agropyron trichophorum (Link) Richt.) and western wheatgrass (Agropyron smithii Rydb.); therefore, seeding of these grasses in areas subject to foxtail barley invasion should be encouraged. The relative drought resistance of turf-type tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) cultivars compared to forage-type cultivars has not been well-documented. Greenhouse and field studies were conducted between 1991 and 1994 to determine rooting potential and drought response of a slow-growing, turf-type tall fescue (`MlC18'), a turf-type cultivar with a moderate growth rate (`Mustang'), and a forage-type cultivar (`Kentucky-31'). In the greenhouse, rooting was determined in sand or calcined clay using clear, polyethylene root tubes 4 cm in diameter by 122 cm deep. Root length density (RLD) was measured for 0- to 30-, 30- to 60-, 60- to 90-, and 90- to 120-cm depths. No differences were observed in RLD at the 0- to 30-cm depth. At other depths, RLD of `Mustang” was generally superior to that of `K-31' and `MlC18'. During a 3-week dry-down in the field in 1994, `MlC18' exhibited greater drought stress and a higher canopy minus air temperature than other cultivars. Advantages afforded by reduced mowing of slow-growing tall fescue cultivars may be negated by reduced drought resistance.

Two AR542-endophyte infected tall fescue breeding pools were subjected to one cycle of selection for increased endophyte hyphal density. Hyphal density was assessed subjectively by microscopic examination of the leaf sheath. Levels of alkaloids produced by both the original and selected populations were subsequently measured during summer. Levels of lolines and peramine alkaloids increased significantly in one breeding pool (by 40% and 29%, respectively), with non-significant increases (by 24% and 2%) in the other breeding pool. The apparent correlation between observed hyphal density and levels of alkaloids supports the hypothesis that levels of lolines and peramine produced by fungal endophytes in their host grass are at least partly due to endophyte hyphal mass in the host sheath tissue. Measured lolines in one breeding pool were 21 times greater than the other, while sheath hyphal density was less. Possible explanations include contrasting patterns of hyphal colonisation beyond the sheath, and/or variation in the quantity of lolines produced per unit hyphal mass. AC Endure red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is a diploid cultivar of the double-cut type developed by mass selection at the Crop and Livestock Research Centre, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Charlottetown, PEI.
