Seed rates for soft white winter wheat in southwestern Ontario

This study was undertaken to determine the optimum seed rate for soft white winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars currently grown in southwestern Ontario (> 2900 corn heat units) where 65% of Ontario’s wheat is grown. The currently recommended density of 240–400 plants m−2 was determined using obsolete cultivars. Two popular cultivars, Harus, which tillers abundantly, and Rebecca, which tillers less, were grown from 100 to 600 seeds m−2 in increments of 100. The optimum seed rate for grain yield was 435 seeds m−2. This rate appears to be suitable for a range of genotypes adapted to southwestern Ontario. There was no interaction for yield among cultivars, years and locations. Yield was not related to tillering capacity, as the lower the plant density the more seeds there were per head. Karat is a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) with bread making quality, high grain yield, and adequate straw strength. It is moderately susceptible to powdery mildew (caused by Erysiphe graminis D.C. ex. Merat f. sp. tritici Marchal) and septoria leaf and glume blotch (caused by Septoria nodorum Berk.) and is suited for production in areas of Eastern Canada where winter survival is not a problem. AC Ron is a soft white winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) cultivar adapted to the traditional winter-wheat-growing area of Ontario. It yields best in Area 2, where corn heat units range from 2700 to 2900, surpassing Harus by 7.1%, despite its susceptibility to the prevalent diseases.Key words: Wheat (winter), cultivar description, Triticum aestivum L. em. This study was carried out to determine if winter wheat in southwestern Ontario should be grown in rows narrower than the conventional 18 cm and if the current recommended seed rate of 3.2 million seeds ha−1 (msh) is adequate. We compared the effect of 10- and 20-cm row spacings and 1.6, 3.2, and 6.4 msh seed rates on grain yield, weed growth and yield of underseeded clover. Row spacing at a constant seed rate did not affect yield. With increasing seed rate there was an increase in yield, mainly through more heads per unit area, which more than compensated for a decrease in seeds per head. Narrow rows reduced the number of lamb’s-quarters and the overall weed count. The optimum seed rate for grain yield was 6.4 msh for ratios of seed cost:crop value less than 1.34. HY355, white spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) combines high grain yield, normal height and photoperiod insensitivity. HY355 is heterogeneous for kernel hardness with 55% of the breeder lines rated hard and 45% rated soft. HY355 is the first registered wheat cultivar eligible for grades of Canada Prairie Spring (white). Harus is a high-yielding, short-strawed, lodging-resistant, early-maturing soft white winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) with resistance to wheat spindle streak mosaic. It has yielded well in southwestern Ontario where corn heat units exceed 2700. Intermediate in quality between Fredrick and Yorkstar, it is fairly resistant to sprouting and the accumulation of α amylase.Key words: Cultivar description, spindle streak mosaic, wheat (winter)
