The aim of this study was to investigate estrus synchronization in prepubertal and pubertal heifers (crossbred ½ Nelore x Red Angus - commercial herd) submitted to a long-term progesterone-based protocol for timed artificial insemination (TAI), as well as overall pregnancy rates. Four hundred forty-seven heifers underwent ultrasound examination of the ovaries and were assigned to one of 3 groups: (1) prepubertal heifers (PPNS; n = 114) with ovarian follicles <8 mm in diameter and no corpus luteum (CL) that were submitted to natural service (NS) by bulls for 10 days; (2) prepubertal heifers (PPTAI; n = 124) with follicles <8 mm in diameter and no CL that underwent estrus synchronization with injection of 4.0 mg estradiol benzoate (EB) and insertion of a controlled-release intravaginal progesterone (P4) device containing 0.558 g P4 on d 0, followed by P4 device removal and injection of 150 mg prostaglandin F2α and 0.6 mg estradiol cypionate (ECP) on d 8, and TAI on d 10; and (3) pubertal heifers (PTAI; n = 209) with follicles >8 mm in diameter and/or a CL that underwent the same protocol as PPTAI heifers. Overall pregnancy rate was determined by transrectal ultrasonography on d 45 after NS or TAI. Data were analyzed using the FREQ procedure of SAS (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC). Pregnancy rates were as follows: 20.1% in PPNS, 37.0% in PPTAI, and 48.5% in PTAI (P < 0.05). In conclusion, TAI after estrus synchronization with a hormonal protocol using EB and ECP in prepubertal and pubertal heifers resulted in higher pregnancy rates than prepubertal heifers exposed to natural service, and exposure of prepubertal heifers to a long-term progesterone-based protocol effectively synchronized estrus.

The aim of the study was to examine the synchronization of estrus and artificial insemination in heifers of Ongole grade and Simental-Ongole grade. The research used 19 Ongole Grade (OG) and 18 Simental-Ongole Crossbred (SOC) heifers. This research applied purposive sampling to determine the research population. The criteria to select the population were heifers which have in mature body. The normality of heifer’s reproductive organs were identified by performing rectal palpation, then 50 mg of medroxy progesterone acetate on vaginal sponge was used to synchronized estrus. The estrus heifer was inseminated using frozen semen. The observed parameters were the number of heifers with normal and abnormal reproductive organs, estrus sign and pregnancy. Data were analyzed descriptively. This study showed that OG and SOC with abnormal reproductive organs was 1 heifer (5.56%) and 7 heifers (36.84%), respectively. The responses of estrus synchronization in heifers with normal and abnormal reproductive organs were 94.17% and 100% in OG, and 100% and 42.86% in SOC. Meanwhile, the pregnancy rate was 70.59 and 0% in OG, and 50.00 and 0% in SOC. In conclusion, the number of SOC heifers with abnormal reproductive organs is higher than OG. Estrus synchronization using 50 mg medroxy progesterone acetate increase the amount of estrus and pregnancy in heifers with normal reproductive organs.

Two experiments were conducted to test the efficiency of using vaginal mucus conductivity measurements in sows to fix the breeding time for artificial insemination (Al). The apparatus used was the Heat Detector No 113 from Mitogiken Ltd. (Group Sumimoto, Toronto). In exp. 1, 57 crossbred sows were measured three times daily from 1 to 5 d after weaning (day 0) in order to characterize the pattern of vaginal mucus conductivity before estrus. In all females onset of estrus was checked twice daily in the presence of a sexually mature boar. Sow vaginal mucus conductivity readings (12 unit scale) averaged 4.1 units at weaning and 7.4 units at estrus. Only 60% of the sows reached the manufacturer's recommendation of 7–9 units at estrus. Conductivity increased by an average of three units between weaning and estrus in 62% of the sows. In exp. 2,201 crossbred sows were assigned randomly according to parity number to three groups. The first group was bred by Al when the sows showed a three-unit increase in vaginal mucus conductivity after weaning, without estrus detection by the boar. The two other groups of sows were checked once daily for onset of estrus using a mature boar, with a group bred by natural service and the other by Al. There was a large amount of variation between and within sows in absolute vaginal mucus conductivity readings. Only 29.3% of sows were inseminated at a reading of 7–9 units while 53.7% of the sows showed a differential of + 3 units after weaning, among which 50% reached a reading of 7–9 units at breeding. Sixteen (41.5%) sows showed behavioral estrus signs at an avg. conductivity reading of 4.0 units, without reaching the + 3 unit differential in conductivity. Conception rate and litter size of sows bred at a + 3 unit differential in conductivity were lower than the two groups of sows which were heat checked with a boar. No difference was observed among the latter two groups. The results indicated that vaginal mucus conductivity alone, without the use of a boar is not a reliable tool to fix the proper time to inseminate sows.
