AbstractLet S and T be locally compact topological semigroups and a semidirect product. Conditions are determined under which topological left amenability of S and T implies that of , and conversely. The results are used to show that for a large class of semigroups which are neither compact nor groups, various notions of topological left amenability coincide.

Most of the interesting groups encountered in the physics literature are semidirect product groups. These groups are of the general form G = H ×τ K, where H and K are locally compact groups. In this paper, we consider the quasi regular representation on such a group G and investigate when it is possible to construct a family of coherent states associated to this representation.

SynopsisIn this paper we define two semigroups of continuous relations on topological spaces and determine a large class of spaces for which Banach-Stone type theorems hold, i.e. spaces for which isomorphism of the semigroups implies homeomorphism of the spaces. This class includes all 0-dimensional Hausdorff spaces and all those completely regular Hausdorff spaces which contain an arc; indeed all of K. D. Magill's S*-spaces are included. Some of the algebraic structure of the semigroup of all continuous relations is elucidated and a method for producing examples of topological semigroups of relations is discussed.

1. Introduction. K. Deleeuw and I. Glicksberg [4] proved that if S and T are commutative topological semigroups with identity, then the Bochner almost periodic compactification of S × T is the direct product of the Bochner almost periodic compactifications of S and T. In Section 3 we consider the semidirect product of two semi topological semigroups with identity and two unital C*-subalgebras and of W(S) and W(T) respectively, where W(S) is the weakly almost periodic functions on S. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions and for a semidirect product compactification of to exist such that this compactification is a semi topological semigroup and such that this compactification is a topological semigroup. Moreover, we obtain the largest such compactifications.

AbstractA classical result of I. Glicksberg and K. de Leeuw asserts that the almost periodic compactification of a direct product S × T of abelian semigroups with identity is (canonically isomorphic to) the direct product of the almost periodic compactiflcations of S and T. Some efforts have been made to generalize this result and recently H. D. Junghenn and B. T. Lerner have proved a theorem giving necessary and sufficient conditions for an F-compactification of a semidirect product S⊗σT to be a semidirect product of compactiflcations of S and T. A different such theorem is presented here along with a number of corollaries and examples which illustrate its scope and limitations. Some behaviour that can occur for semidirect products, but not for direct products, is exposed

AbstractIn this paper we study commutative topological semigroups S admitting an absolutely continuous measure. When S is cancellative we show that S admits a weaker topology J with respect to which (S, J) is embeddable as a subsemigroup with non-empty interior in some locally compact topological group. As a consequence, we deduce certain results related to the existence of invariant measures on S and for a large class of locally compact topological semigroups S, we associate S with some useful topological subsemigroup of a locally compact group.

AbstractFor unimodular semidirect products of locally compact amenable groups N and H, we show that one can always construct a Følner net of the form (Aα × Bβ) for G, where (Aα) is a strong form of Følner net for N and (Bβ) is any Følner net for H. Applications to the Heisenberg and Euclidean motion groups are provided.

Let S be a (jointly continuous) topological semigroup, C(S) the set of all bounded complex-valued continuous functions on S and M (S) the set of all bounded complex-valued Radon measures on S. Let (S) (or (S)) be the set of all µ ∈ M (S) such that x → │µ│ (x-1C) (or x → │µ│(Cx-1), respectively) is a continuous mapping of S into ℝ, for every compact set C ⊆ S, and . (Here │µ│ denotes the measure arising from the total variation of µ and the sets x-1C and Cx-1 are as defined in Section 2.) When S is locally compact the set Ma(S) was studied by A. C. and J. W. Baker in (1) and (2), by Sleijpen in (14), (15) and (16) and by us in (3). In this paper we show that some of the results of (1), (2), (14) and (15) remain valid for certain non-locally compact S and raise some new problems for such S.

For a very large class of topological semigroups, we establish lower and upper bounds for the cardinality of the set of left invariant means on the space of left uniformly continuous functions. In certain cases we show that such a cardinality is exactly , where b is the smallest cardinality of the covering of the underlying topological semigroup by compact sets.

One of the most basic theorems in harmonic analysis on locally compact commutative groups is Bochner's theorem (see [16, p. 19]). This theorem characterizes the positive definite functions. In 1971, R. Lindhal and P. H. Maserick proved a version of Bochner's theorem for discrete commutative semigroups with identity and with an involution * (see [13]). Later, in 1980, C. Berg and P. H. Maserick in [6] generalized this theorem for exponentially bounded positive definite functions on discrete commutative semigroups with identity and with an involution *. In this work we develop these results, and also the Hausdorff moment theorem, for an extensive class of topological semigroups, the so-called “foundation topological semigroups”. We shall give examples to show that these theorems do not extend in the obvious way to general locally compact topological semigroups.
