Attention is directed to this comprehensive review of experience with the care of the pregnant diabetic woman and her offspring at the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion in Edinburg. The paper describes the appearance and clinical manifestations of infants born to diabetic women, their clinical progress in the first month of life, the disturbances of metabolism and the pathologic findings, the management of the newly born, and development up to the age of 10 years. The original paper must be consulted for the wealth of data it contains. Particular emphasis is placed upon the importance of adequate supervision of the diabetic mother from not later than the twentieth week of gestation and upon conservative but especially observant care of the newborn, as means of achieving the lowest possible mortality for the offspring of diabetic women. The mortality in the present series is among the lowest of series reported from all over the world.
