AbstractIn this paper, the static analysis of functionally graded (FG) circular plates resting on linear elastic foundation with various edge conditions is carried out by using a semi-analytical approach. The governing differential equations are derived based on the three dimensional theory of elasticity and assuming that the mechanical properties of the material vary exponentially along the thickness direction and Poisson’s ratio remains constant. The solution is obtained by employing the state space method (SSM) to express exactly the plate behavior along the graded direction and the one dimensional differential quadrature method (DQM) to approximate the radial variations of the parameters. The effects of different parameters (e.g., material property gradient index, elastic foundation coefficients, the surfaces conditions (hard or soft surface of the plate on foundation), plate geometric parameters and edges condition) on the deformation and stress distributions of the FG circular plates are investigated.

This paper is concerned with the axisymmetric vibration problem of polar orthotropic circular plates of quadratically varying thickness and resting on an elastic foundation. The problem is solved by using the Rayleigh–Ritz method with boundary characteristic orthonormal polynomials for approximating the deflection function. Numerical results are computed for frequencies, nodal radii and mode shapes. Three-dimensional graphs are also plotted for the first four normal modes of axisymmetric vibration of plates with free, simply-supported and clamped edge conditions for various values of taper, orthotropy and foundation parameters.

AbstractFree vibration analysis of functionally graded (FG) curved panels integrated with piezoelectric layers under various boundary conditions is studied. A panel with two opposite edges is simply supported, and arbitrary boundary conditions at the other edges are considered. Two different models of material property variations based on the power law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents and the exponential law distribution of the material properties through the thickness are considered. Based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, an approach combining the state space method and the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. For the simply supported boundary conditions, closed-form solution is given by making use of the Fourier series expansion, and applying the differential quadrature method to the state space formulations along the axial direction, new state equations about state variables at discrete points are obtained for the other cases such as clamped or free-end conditions. Natural frequencies of the hybrid curved panels are presented by solving the eigenfrequency equation, which can be obtained by using edges boundary conditions in this state equation. The results obtained for only FGM shell is verified by comparing the natural frequencies with the results obtained in the literature.

In this paper, a refined quasi-three-dimensional shear deformation theory for thermo-mechanical analysis of functionally graded sandwich plates resting on a two-parameter (Pasternak model) elastic foundation is developed. Unlike the other higher-order theories the number of unknowns and governing equations of the present theory is only four against six or more unknown displacement functions used in the corresponding ones. Furthermore, this theory takes into account the stretching effect due to its quasi-three-dimensional nature. The boundary conditions in the top and bottoms surfaces of the sandwich functionally graded plate are satisfied and no correction factor is required. Various types of functionally graded material sandwich plates are considered. The governing equations and boundary conditions are derived using the principle of virtual displacements. Numerical examples, selected from the literature, are illustrated. A good agreement is obtained between numerical results of the refined theory and the reference solutions. A parametric study is presented to examine the effect of the material gradation and elastic foundation on the deflections and stresses of functionally graded sandwich plate resting on elastic foundation subjected to thermo-mechanical loading.

A method is developed to determine the natural frequencies of vibration of an orthotropic hollow body of revolution of constant thickness but of arbitrary smooth meridian. Equations are derived using the linear three-dimensional theory of elasticity, and a numerical solution is obtained using the differential quadrature method. The geometric generality of the solution is attained by delaying definition of local geometric parameters until the solution stage. Validation is by comparison with previously published results, including results for a hollow orthotropic cylinder. Sample results are given for orthotropic hollow cylinders and spherical segments, and conclusions are drawn.
