This paper presents a design for a reconfigurable packaging system that can handle cartons of different shape and sizes and is amenable to ever changing demands of packaging industries for perfumery and cosmetic products. The system takes structure of a multi-fingered robot hand, which can provide fine motions, and dexterous manipulation capability that may be required in a typical packaging-assembly line. The paper outlines advanced modeling and simulation undertaken to design the packaging system and discusses the experimental work carried out. The new packaging system is based on the principle of reconfigurability, that shows adaptability to simple as well as complex carton geometry. The rationale of developing such a system is presented with description of its human equivalent. The hardware and software implementations are also discussed together with directions for future research.

Simulation offers a quick, controllable and tunable approach for prototyping complex assembly processes in manufacturing environments. In order to improve the responsiveness of production system, this paper proposes a new approach based on data driven modeling and simulation methodology, it can automatically generate the simulation model of production system and realize rapid modification. The generated model also has high efficiency, readability and reusability. The approach is developed for an automotive assembly line. Through the modeling approach of IDEF1X, a data structure of simulation model was constructed, a model simulator was implemented in Arena by VBA program, and then a simulation model for target production system was built automatically through the attribute values in the data structure. The management and control process of assembly line is divided into different levels by hierarchical modeling approach, modeling element and control logic of simulation are separated. The case study of the automotive assembly line demonstrates the validity of data driven modeling and simulation methodology.

The equilibrium problem is one important aspect of industry assembly line design. This paper puts forward the method to solve the industry assembly line’s equilibrium problem based on the genetic algorithm’s heuristic procedure and on this basis it also optimizes the industry assembly line’s layout and synthetically considers the material carrying cost, plant area’s use ratio and other factors in industry manufacturing. Then it optimizes by eM-Plant simulation software and combining with genetic algorithm to efficiently acquire visual and satisfying layout effects. At last, it uses examples of industry assembly line to verify this method’s feasibility.

The assembly line is very complicated and its performance directly determines the aircraft production efficiency and cost. Therefore, the modeling, simulation and optimization for aircraft assembly line are very important. In this paper, a modeling and simulation approach for aircraft assembly line based on Quest simulation software has been investigated. Firstly, the characteristics of the aircraft assembly and Quest are briefly introduced in this article. Then, the assembly process model of center fuselage was established, the assembly process is simulated and analyzed, the bottleneck in the production line has been found, which can be used to optimize the assembly line.
