This paper presents a refined taxonomy of XML schema languages based on the work by Murata et al., 2005. It can be seen as first building block for a more elaborate formal analysis of XML and its accompanied specifications, in this case: XML schema languages such as DTD, XSD and RELAX NG.

This paper describes a new approach to the kinematic analysis of planar mechanisms. The basis of the analytical method is a generic four-bar sub-mechanism which is used as the single building block from which other composite mechanisms may be created. A computer program has been written embodying this method and has been demonstrated to operate successfully providing animated displays of displacement, velocity and acceleration diagrams for a wide range of complex mechanisms.

Ever modified an XML schema? Ever broken something while fixing a bug or adding a new feature? As with any piece of engineering, the more complex a schema is, the harder it is to maintain. In other domains, unit tests dramatically reduce the number of regressions and thus provide a kind of safety net for maintainers. Can we learn from these techniques and adapt them to XML schema languages? In this workshop session, we develop a schema using unit test techniques, to illustrate their benefits in this domain.

RosettaNet is an industry-driven e-business process standard that defines common inter-company public processes and their associated business documents. RosettaNet is based on the Service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm and all business documents are expressed in DTD or XML Schema. Our “ontologically-enhanced RosettaNet” effort translates RosettaNet business documents into a Web ontology language, allowing business reasoning based on RosettaNet message exchanges. This chapter describes our extension to RosettaNet and shows how it can be used in business integrations for better interoperability. The usage of a Web ontology language in RosettaNet collaborations can help accommodate partner heterogeneity in the setup phase and can ease the back-end integration, enabling for example more competition in the purchasing processes. It provides also a building block to adopt a semantic SOA with richer discovery, selection and composition capabilities.
