The article provides review of foreign and domestic publications on the problems of creation, development and use of authority files (AF) of names of persons, names of organizations, geographical names and other objects both at the international, national and regional levels. The paper presents analysis of the foreign experience of AF maintenance. The authors note that, due to the availability of universal collections and qualified specialists, AF formation abroad is usually carried out by national libraries. A substantive analysis of foreign publications has shown that national AFs (NAF) are characterized by data variability and diversity of approaches. The authors studied the experience of successful combination of NAF created according to different methods within the framework of the international corporate project — Virtual International Authority File (VIAF). The article notes that most of the Russian libraries do not use AF, since AF, created in republican and regional scientific libraries, as a rule, are not publicly available. At the same time, creation by a separate library of its own AF leads to high labour and material costs, and the formation of a large number of AF leads to the variability of the AFs created for the same objects. The authors conclude that for efficient use of AFs within the country, it is necessary to apply unified methods and rules for creation of authority records. Another way out is the application of the Semantic Web technology, which allows linking AFs created according to different methods. It is necessary to make maximum use of existing dictionaries or create dictionaries based on the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Resource Description Framework (RDF), RDF Schema (RDFS) and Web Ontology Language (OWL) standards.

Abstract Barbau et al. (2012) proposed OntoSTEP that translates the STandard for the Exchange of Product Model Data (STEP) schema and its instances to an ontology and knowledge graphs represented in the Web Ontology Language (OWL). OntoSTEP models can be integrated with any OWL models to enrich their semantics. However, the current implementation has several limitations, mainly in (1) supporting the latest ISO 10303 schemas and (2) generating various representation types depending on the purpose of use. We present an improved implementation of OntoSTEP to overcome these limitations. In this paper, we demonstrate that the new implementation can successfully translate STEP schemas and instances in a faster and more flexible way, thus furthering the adoption of the full capabilities of ISO 10303. By encoding STEP entities in OWL, we facilitate integration with other standards through knowledge graphs.

The process of maintenance of an underlying semantic model that supports data management and addresses the interoperability challenges in the domain of telemedicine and integrated care is not a trivial task when performed manually. We present a methodology that leverages the provided serializations of the Health Level Seven International (HL7) Fast Health Interoperability Resources (FHIR) specification to generate a fully functional OWL ontology along with the semantic provisions for maintaining functionality upon future changes of the standard. The developed software makes a complete conversion of the HL7 FHIR Resources along with their properties and their semantics and restrictions. It covers all FHIR data types (primitive and complex) along with all defined resource types. It can operate to build an ontology from scratch or to update an existing ontology, providing the semantics that are needed, to preserve information described using previous versions of the standard. All the results based on the latest version of HL7 FHIR as a Web Ontology Language (OWL-DL) ontology are publicly available for reuse and extension.

Background: Ontologies of precisely defined, controlled vocabularies are essential to curate the results of biological experiments such that the data are machine searchable, can be computationally analyzed, and are interoperable across the biomedical research continuum. There is also an increasing need for methods to interrelate phenotypic data easily and accurately from experiments in animal models with human development and disease. Results: Here we present the Xenopus Phenotype Ontology (XPO) to annotate phenotypic data from experiments in Xenopus, one of the major vertebrate model organisms used to study gene function in development and disease. The XPO implements design patterns from the Unified Phenotype Ontology (uPheno), and the principles outlined by the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontologies (OBO Foundry) to maximize interoperability with other species and facilitate ongoing ontology management. Constructed in Web Ontology Language (OWL) the XPO combines the existing uPheno library of ontology design patterns with additional terms from the Xenopus Anatomy Ontology (XAO), the Phenotype and Trait Ontology (PATO) and the Gene Ontology (GO). The integration of these different ontologies into the XPO enables rich phenotypic curation, whilst the uPheno bridging axioms allows phenotypic data from Xenopus experiments to be related to phenotype data from other model organisms and human disease. Moreover, the simple post-composed uPheno design patterns facilitate ongoing XPO development as the generation of new terms and classes of terms can be substantially automated. Conclusions: The XPO serves as an example of current best practices to help overcome many of the inherent challenges in harmonizing phenotype data between different species. The XPO currently consists of approximately 22,000 terms and is being used to curate phenotypes by Xenbase, the Xenopus Model Organism Knowledgebase, forming a standardized corpus of genotype-phenotype data that can be directly related to other uPheno compliant resources.

Assembly precision optimization is an important means to ensure product accuracy, including two aspects: on the one hand, the relevant deviations of out-of-tolerance key characteristics are reduced to the design tolerance range; on the other hand, the deviation fluctuation range of key characteristics with a large process capability index (Cp) can be extended to achieve the balance between accuracy, process capacity, and production cost. By virtue of the accumulated experience, a fast solution can be provided for the out-of-tolerance problem. Therefore, a semantic-based assembly precision optimization method considering process capacity is proposed in this paper. By constructing an ontology model between Cp and optimization strategy, a reasonable assembly precision optimization strategy can be pushed based on product accuracy analysis results. Firstly, an assembly precision optimization semantic model is established by association between analysis results, out-of-tolerance key characteristics, assembly process, and tolerance adjustment defined with Web Ontology Language (OWL) assertions. Furtherly, according to different Cp corresponding to different assembly success rates, Semantics Web Rule Language (SWRL) rules based on Cp are constructed to the push optimization strategy. Finally, the effectiveness of the model is illustrated by an aircraft inner flap.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a process for managing construction project information in such a way as to provide a basis for enhanced decision-making and for collaboration in a construction supply chain. One impediment to the uptake of BIM is the limited interoperability of different BIM systems. To overcome this problem, a set of Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) has been proposed as a standard for the construction industry. Building on IFC, the ifcOWL ontology was developed in order to facilitate representation of building data in a consistent fashion across the Web by using the Web Ontology Language (OWL). This study presents a critical analysis of the ifcOWL ontology and of the associated interoperability issues. It shows how these issues can be resolved by using Basic Formal Ontology (ISO/IEC 21838-2) as top-level architecture. A set of competency questions is used as the basis for comparison of the original ifcOWL with the enhanced ontology, and the latter is used to align with a second ontology – the ontology for building intelligent environments (DOGONT) – in order to demonstrate the added value derived from BFO by showing how querying the enhanced ifcOWL yields useful additional information.

The modelling of agriculture with ontologies has been of interest to many authors in the past years. However, no research, currently, has focused on building a knowledge base ontology for the Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) domain. This study attempts to fill this gap through the development of a Climate Smart Agriculture Ontology (OntoCSA). Information was gathered from secondary sources including websites, published research articles and reports as well as related ontologies, to formalize the OntoCSA ontology in Description Logics (DLs). The OntoCSA ontology was developed in Web Ontology Language (OWL) with Protégé. Furthermore, the OntoCSA ontology was successfully validated with the HermiT reasoner within Protégé. The resulting OntoCSA ontology is a machine-readable model of CSA that can be leveraged in web-based applications for the storage, open and automated access and sharing of CSA information/data, for research and dissemination of best practices

<p>E-Learning is an important support mechanism for educational systems to increase the efficiency of the education process including students and teachers. The current e-learning systems typically lack the level of metacognitive awareness, adaptive tutoring, and time management skills and have not always met the expectations of the learners as required. In this study, we introduce a novel ontological model for the learning process in the e-learning domain. In the framework, we have built a domain ontology that represents knowledge of the learning, the outcome domain ontology covers the whole learning process. We focused on the learning process ontology model conceptualizing knowledge constructions, such as learning courses, and we present the created course and learning process ontology in detail. In this work, we considered three layers of learning process. The top layer defines a general framework of learning process, conceptual model layer, defines the framework of the actual process of the learning process and course ontology model contains the knowledge unit of the learning process. The prototype ontology is constructed in protégé and managed by Java web ontology language-application programming interface (OWL-API). As a result, our model can solve the problems of current e-tutor systems. Also, it can be used for different domain in e-tutor systems. It can reach the characteristics of standardization, reusability, flexibility, and open knowledge. By applying this model, we can avoid applying isolated databases. The constructed ontology can be used in the future to control adaptive intelligent e-tutor frameworks.</p>

Objectives: Playing an important role in the history of Chinese animation art, the minority theme animation not only contains strong national spirit and historical tradition, but also has a close relation with social-historical evolution and the characteristics of its historical stage during its development, thus making ontology language more abundant in social changes. In this paper, the development of minority theme animation is described macroscopically according to the statistics and analysis on the output, theme and object of Chinese minority animation. The “pluralistic integration” theory-based systematic analysis on the relationship between minority theme animation and Chinese social-economical development, national literature and art, ethnic policy, ethnic culture, etc. helps us to outline the nationalimage of new China.In the development of Chinese animation, tobacco advertising is often involved in the form of anime painting. In this context, the presented cultural phenomenon and value shouldattract the attention of scholars.

PurposeThis work provides a generic review of the existing data mining ontologies (DMOs) and also provides a base platform for ontology developers and researchers for gauging the ontologies for satisfactory coverage and usage.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses a systematic literature review approach to identify 35 DMOs in the domain between the years 2003 and 2021. Various parameters, like purpose, design methodology, operations used, language representation, etc. are available in the literature to review ontologies. Accompanying the existing parameters, a few parameters, like semantic reasoner used, knowledge representation formalism was added and a list of 20 parameters was prepared. It was then segregated into two groups as generic parameters and core parameters to review DMOs.FindingsIt was observed that among the 35 papers under the study, 26 papers were published between the years 2006 and 2016. Larisa Soldatova, Saso Dzeroski and Pance Panov were the most productive authors of these DMO-related publications. The ontological review indicated that most of the DMOs were domain and task ontologies. Majority of ontologies were formal, modular and represented using web ontology language (OWL). The data revealed that Ontology development 101, METHONTOLOGY was the preferred design methodology, and application-based approaches were preferred for evaluation. It was also observed that around eight ontologies were accessible, and among them, three were available in ontology libraries as well. The most reused ontologies were OntoDM, BFO, OBO-RO, OBI, IAO, OntoDT, SWO and DMOP. The most preferred ontology editor was Protégé, whereas the most used semantic reasoner was Pellet. Even ontology metrics for 16 DMOs were also available.Originality/valueThis paper carries out a basic level review of DMOs employing a parametric approach, which makes this study the first of a kind for the review of DMOs.
