Rotodynamic multiphase pumps are usually equipped with many compression units to provide sufficient boosting pressure for the transportation of production fluid in gas oil field. It is a challenge to maintain pump performance while flow parameters in each stage vary due to the compressibility of gas-liquid phase. In this article, a stage-by-stage design method is proposed to improve the boosting capability of a multiphase pump. Variations of flow parameters in each stage are investigated based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation. Available methods to determinate main impeller geometry parameters of impeller are discussed. The stage-by-stage design method is applied on a five-stage multiphase pump when the inlet gas volume fraction (GVF) are 30% and 50% separately. The second stage is modified base on its corresponding inlet flow parameters when inlet GVF is 30% while the second and third stage are modified when inlet GVF is 50%. Flow parameters, pressure distribution and velocity distribution are compared between the original pump and modified pump. Differential pressure of the modified pump increases by 53.72 kPa and 58.57 kPa respectively when inlet GVFs are 30% and 50%. The feasibility of the stage-by-stage design method is verified through the comparison results.

AbstractThe machine theatre in France achieves its peak in the second half of the seventeenth century. It is the construction of machines that permits the adequate representation of the third dimension on stage. This optical illusion is created by flying characters, as heroes, gods, or demons moving horizontally and vertically. The enumeration indicates that only characters possessing either ethically exemplary character traits or incorporating sin are allowed to fly. Therefore, the third dimension indicates bienséance – or its opposite. According to this, the following thesis is deduced: The machine theatre illustrates via aesthetic concerns characterising its third dimension an ethic foundation. Ethic and aesthetics determine each other in the context of both, decorum and in theatre practice. In order to prove this thesis three steps are taken. First of all, the machine theatre’s relationship to imitation and creation is explored. Second, the stage design, representing the aesthetic benefits of the machines in service of the third dimension, are explained. Finally, the concrete example of Pierre Corneille’s Andromède is analysed by pointing out the role of Pegasus and Perseus.

AbstractPhysical prototyping during early stage design typically represents an iterative process. Commonly, a single prototype will be used throughout the process, with its form being modified as the design evolves. If the form of the prototype is not captured as each iteration occurs understanding how specific design changes impact upon the satisfaction of requirements is challenging, particularly retrospectively.In this paper two different systems for digitising physical artefacts, structured light scanning (SLS) and photogrammetry (PG), are investigated as means for capturing iterations of physical prototypes. First, a series of test artefacts are presented and procedures for operating each system are developed. Next, artefacts are digitised using both SLS and PG and resulting models are compared against a master model of each artefact. Results indicate that both systems are able to reconstruct the majority of each artefact's geometry within 0.1mm of the master, however, overall SLS demonstrated superior performance, both in terms of completion time and model quality. Additionally, the quality of PG models was far more influenced by the effort and expertise of the user compared to SLS.
