ÁNGEL GUIRAO Y LA ENSEÑANZA DE LA BOTÁNICA. SU PAPEL EN EL DESARROLLO DEL JARDÍN DEL INSTITUTO PROVINCIAL DE SEGUNDA ENSEÑANZA DE MURCIA

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo es doble. En primer lugar, estudiamos la figura y la obra del médico y naturalista Ángel Guirao Navarro al frente del Instituto Provincial de Segunda Enseñanza de Murcia. Este polifacético profesor tuvo un importante rol en el desarrollo de los espacios escolares para la enseñanza práctica de la Historia Natural, dándoles contenido con la aportación de objetos naturales recolectados por él o adquiridos por el Instituto. También analizamos los materiales de apoyo para esa enseñanza como: los libros de texto, el herbario y las láminas de pared. Por otro lado, estudiamos el espacio utilizado para la enseñanza práctica de la Botánica y la Agricultura. El papel de Ángel Guirao en el desarrollo del Jardín Botánico fue clave para que este se convirtiera en uno de los jardines educativos más completos de España con la construcción de invernaderos de cristal, umbráculos, pabellón docente y la adquisición de plantas y semillas facilitadas por el Jardín Botánico de Valencia, el Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid y el Instituto Agronómico de la Moncloa. Abstract The goal of this paper is twofold. First, we study the figure and work of the medicine doctor and naturalist Ángel Guirao Navarro, head of the Secondary School of Murcia. This versatile teacher played an important role in the development of scholar spaces for the practical teaching of Natural History by contributing with natural objects collected by him or acquired by the Secondary School of Murcia. We also analyse the pedagogical materials for this teaching such as: textbooks, herbarium and wall papers. On the other hand, we study the space used for the practical teaching of botany and agriculture. The role of Ángel Guirao in the development of the Botanical Garden was key for it to become one of the most complete educative gardens of Spain with the construction of glass greenhouses, shade structures, one teaching pavilion, as well as the acquisition of plants and seeds provided by the Botanical Garden of Valencia, the Royal Botanic Garden of Madrid and the Agronomic Institute of La Moncloa. This essay charts the role of armor in Renaissance practices of knowledge. Since the advent of gunpowder warfare, armor was largely unfit for combat, yet still became a centerpiece of princely representation and was prominently displayed in early collection spaces. Rather than illustrating chivalric virtues or antiquarian taste, such suits in my reading signal a shift towards a physiological fashioning of learning. Through juxtaposing two key sets of armor – one ‘gothic’ suit situated in the studiolo, the other a ‘grotesque’ garniture for a chamber of curiosities –, my paper traces how these embodied settings conflated epistemological with political sensibilities. While the earlier ensemble acted as a mnemonic ‘prosthesis’ that enhanced the mind of the wearer, the latter evoked natural history imagery to remap the order of things around personal authority. Objects of armor thus spotlight the interplay of material and political culture in engineering the early modern subject.El presente ensayo traza el papel de las armaduras en las costumbres renacentistas del conocimiento. Desde la aparición de las armas de pólvora, las armaduras dejaron de ser apropiadas para el combate, si bien todavía constituyeron una pieza central de representaciones principescas y fueron ampliamente expuestas en espacios de colección. En lugar de ilustrar las virtudes caballerescas o los estilos como antigüedades, estas vestimentas señalan, a mi entender, un giro hacia el conocimiento fisiológico de la moda. A través de la yuxtaposición de dos conceptos clave de las armaduras –uno como vestimenta gótica emplazada en el studiolo (taller de arte), otro como decoración «grotesca» en una sala de curiosidades – mi texto indaga cómo estos elementos ajustados al cuerpo confrontaban las sensibilidades epistemológicas y políticas. Mientras que las primeras actuaban como una prótesis que fortalece la mente del que las usa, las segundas evocan la imaginería de la historia natural para recolocar el orden de las cosas alrededor de la autoridad personal. Las armaduras enfocan de este modo la interacción entre la cultura material y la política en el desarrollo del sujeto moderno.

The present investigation aims to analyze the effect of motivation on students’ causal attributions to choose or abandon chemistry when it first becomes optional in the secondary education curriculum in Spain. Attributions to the effect of the family and to the teacher and classroom methodology were found to be common predictors of the choice to all the students in the sample. However, our analyses point to a significant effect of the students’ motivation in other types of attributions. In the case of at-risk of abandonment students, specific causal attributions to the effect of friends and to the subject's relationship with mathematics were found. On the other hand, the effect of media was a significant predictor only in the case of highly-motivated students. Our study provides several suggestions for teachers, schools, and administrations to design counseling strategies to help students make the right choices.

<p align="justify">A predação de lagartos raramente é observada na natureza, e eventos envolvendo serpentes são ainda mais escassos. Aqui nós documentamos em detalhes a predação de um lagarto (Tropidurus hispidus (Spix, 1825)) por uma serpente (Oxyrhopus trigeminus Duméril, Bibron &amp; Duméril, 1854). Muitos estudos identificaram lagartos Tropidurus Wied-Neuwied, 1825 como presas de serpentes brasileiras. Assim, este registro fornece importantes informações sobre a história natural de ambas as espécies, especialmente de O. trigeminus, que são essenciais para a compreensão de sua ecologia.</p><p align="justify"><strong>Palavras chave</strong>: Ecologia alimentar, dieta, constrição de presas, Saurofagia.<strong></strong></p><p align="justify"><strong>Abstract</strong>: The predation of lizards is rarely observed in the wild, and events involving snakes are scarcer still. Here we document in detail the predation of a lizard (Tropidurus hispidus (Spix, 1825)) by a snake (Oxyrhopus trigeminus Duméril, Bibron &amp; Duméril, 1854). Many studies have identified Tropidurus Wied-Neuwied, 1825 lizards as prey for Brazilian snakes. Thus, this record provides important insights into the natural history of both species, especially O. trigeminus, which are essential for the understanding of their ecology.<strong></strong></p><p align="justify"><strong>Key words</strong>: Feed ecology, diet, prey constriction, Saurophagy.</p>

RESUMO: O presente trabalho objetiva apresentar uma leitura de “Palhaço da boca verde”, do livro Tutaméia (Terceiras Estórias), sob a perspectiva do duplo. São três os artistas que fazem parte do enredo, compondo a complexa situação de um triângulo amoroso: Mema Verguedo, X. Ruysconcellos e Ona Pomona. Tais personagens – cada qual à sua maneira – são seres cindidos. No que se refere à X. Ruysconcellos, sob a pele do palhaço Ritripas, este procura fugir da realidade. No que diz respeito às figuras femininas, uma atua como o alter ego da outra. Embora X. Ruysconcellos demonstre inicial interesse por Ona Pomona, ao final da narrativa, ele descobre ser Mema Verguedo a sua metade faltante. Neste momento, cada um dos amantes reencontra a sua própria androginia. ABSTRACT: This essay analyses the short story “Palhaço da boca verde”, presented in the book Tutaméia (Terceiras Estórias), under the perspective of the double. Mema Verguedo, X. Ruysconcellos and Ona Pomona are the three artists who take part in the plot, composing a complex situation of a love triangle. These characters – each one in a different way – are divided beings. Regarding X. Ruysconcellos, by playing the role of the clown Ritripas, he tries to escape from reality. With reference to the female figures, one acts as the alter ego of the other. Although X. Ruysconcellos shows initial interest to Ona Pomona, at the end of the narrative, he discovers that Mema Verguedo is his missing half. In this moment, both lovers meet again their own androgyny. Museu de História Natural e Jardim Botânico (MHNJB) é um órgão suplementar da Universidade Federalde Minas Gerais, direcionado para a investigação científica e atividades de extensão ambiental e cultural,constituindo-se um espaço onde a ciência é exibida e disseminada para o público leigo. O Museu conta comexposições e espaços artístico-culturais relacionados às temáticas de arqueologia pré-histórica e histórica,mineralogia, plantas medicinais, botânica, cartografia histórica e arte ambiental. Com intuito de promoverpráticas extensionistas significativas e pesquisa no âmbito da geologia, foi criado em 2010 o Centro deReferência em Patrimônio Geológico que tem como um de seus objetivos promover a difusão da geologiae da geodiversidade permitindo a sensibilização do público para a geoconservação.ABSTRACT: The Museum of Natural History and Botanical Garden (MHNJB) is a part of the Federal University of MinasGerais - UFMG, and constitutes a space where science is shown and disseminated for a lay public developingscientific research and practical activities of environmental and cultural extension. The Museum counts withexpositions and related artistic-cultural spaces focussing on prehistoric and historical archaeology, mineralogy,medicinal plants, botany, historical cartography and environmental art. With the objective to increase thedissemination of geosciences to those citizens, the Center of Reference in Geological Heritage was createdin 2010 and has as one of its aims promoting geology, geodiversity and geoconservation.

Solanum ×edinense Berthault, is a spontaneously occurring hybrid between S. demissum Lindl. and the cultivated potato, S. tuberosum L., found near potato fields in Mexico. Although not described until 1911, this hybrid was in cultivation at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh shortly after the Irish Potato Famine of 1845–1849 and proved to be highly resistant to late blight, Phytophthora infestans. In the mid-19th century late blight caused widespread failure of the potato crop across Europe and played a central role in the Irish Potato Famine. Using the parent species in controlled crosses we have recreated the hybrid that was named by Berthault in recognition of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh as the source of his plant material. We have also researched the early history of this hybrid potato in Edinburgh and demonstrated disease resistance through field exposure during the outbreak of late blight in Edinburgh in 2019. This work underlines the important role of this hybrid in the breeding of disease resistant potato cultivars.

Sir William Wright Smith, the eminent botanist, who was President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh from 1944 to 1949, died on 15 December 1956, in his eighty-second year. For thirty-four years he held the dual appointment of Regius Professor of Botany in the University of Edinburgh and Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh; he was also Queen’s Botanist in Scotland. Born at Parkend near Lochmaben on 2 February 1875, the son of a Dumfries-shire farmer, he early acquired the interest in living things and a love for the country, which (though he was to spend the greater part of his life in Edinburgh) remained predominantly with him all his days. His school was the Dumfries Academy where he went till the age of sixteen, when he left for Edinburgh as first University Bursar. Every day he had to travel to school by train, yet he found time to explore his native countryside, and his regard for natural history was by no means confined to plants. For example, he enjoyed watching birds and fishing, or, with one or two companions, guddling for trout or, again, in a leisure hour lying on some sunny bank by a convenient rabbit warren with book and gun. Though not robust he played conventional games, and he was fond of cycling, sometimes covering long distances, once at least more than a hundred miles in one day.
