Com base nas Gespräche mit Goethe in den letzten Jahren seines Lebens 1823-1832 [Conversações com Goethe nos últimos anos de sua vida 1823-1832] (Leipzig, 1836), de Johann Peter Eckermann, até a sua publicação na Revista Americana (Bahia, 1848), sob o título “Conselhos de Goethe aos homens de lettras”, mostramos um exemplo de transferências culturais teuto-brasileiras em meados do século XIX. Nosso foco está voltado para as primeiras dinâmicas de tradução e circulação transcultural das Gespräche e da imagem do intelectual Goethe considerado como “colossal” muito além do nacional. Os suportes Foreign Quarterly Review e Revue britannique desempenharam um papel mediador essencial como plataformas de tradução, transferência e circulação da obra. Além da ressemantização das ideias de Goethe em cada contexto cultural, aqui especialmente sua ideia de liberdade tornara-se visível ao mesmo tempo que a sua transculturalidade e o papel de traduções no espaço cultural brasileiro, formando desde cedo a memória cultural estrangeira da literatura brasileira.

This chapter shows how contemporary reviews of Romantic poetry, and the hostile rhetoric of insanity they used, both stigmatized and popularized the Romantic mad poet. A forensic rhetoric, drawing directly on medical ideas of partial insanity and critical ‘moral management’, was deployed by the periodical press in the first quarter of the nineteenth century—first the quarterlies like the Edinburgh Review and the Quarterly Review, then later new capricious and aggressive magazines such as Blackwood’s, and more quotidian or staid journals—against all of the major Romantic poets. The chapter shows, moreover, how the polemical terms in which Romantic poets were dismissed also held the seeds of their later canonization. The periodical critics, while they used slurs of meaningless insanity to dismiss poetry for political and reactionary ends, also spread the fame of ‘mad genius’, turning a marginalized opinion on the link between creativity and disorder into a cultural phenomenon.

Abstract The argument of this essay is that several of the notes that Herman Melville wrote in the back leaves of one of his Shakespeare volumes——notes that have been an object of interest and speculation ever since their discovery in the 1930s——were responses to essays written by Leigh Hunt and collected in a volume called The Indicator. In all likelihood, Melville read these essays——along with a Quarterly Review essay by Francis Palgrave, which has previously been shown to be the source of other notes in the back of the Shakespeare volume——on the sofa of his father-in-law, Lemuel Shaw, shortly before or after the birth of his son Malcolm in February 1849. The discovery of the new source is important both as an aid in identifying when and where Melville took all of these notes and as an indication of how carefully Melville studied the British periodical essay before beginning Moby-Dick (1851). In the essays of writers like Hunt, he encountered a form that seemed as though it could stretch to accommodate his literary and philosophical ambitions without sacrificing the companionship of the implied reader. For at least two years, Melville would believe enough in the possibilities of that form to compose his miraculously sociable expressions of unresolvable hope and rage, to give voice to the seemingly ““wicked,”” and yet to feel, as he told Nathaniel Hawthorne, ““spotless as the lamb.””
