In this contribution, we introduce geographic concepts in the humanities and present the results of a spacetime visualization of ancient buildings over the last centuries. The techniques and approaches used were based on cartographic research to visualize spatio-temporal information. As a case study, we applied cartographic styling techniques to a model of the Royal Castle in Warsaw and its different spatial elements, which were constructed and destroyed during their eventful history. In our case, the space-time cube approach seems to be the most suitable representation of this spatio-temporal information. Therefore, we digitized the different footprints of the castle during the ancient centuries as well as the landscape structure around, and annotated them with monarchies, epochs and time. During the digitization process, we had to cope with difficulties like sources in various scales and map projections, which resulted in varying accuracies. The results were stored in KML to support a wide variety of visualization platforms.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Mixed reality is a rather new technology but came to its nowadays success through the availability of devices like Microsoft HoloLens which easily support the users and developers to use such devices. Therefore, visualization specialists like cartographers paid attention due to interaction possibilities such devices provide. In particular, to utilize the huge amount of opportunities such device gave. The applicability within the cartographic domain needs to be further investigated.</p><p>The main goal of this contribution is to evaluate the applicability of a mixed reality device in the domain of spatio-temporal representations on the example of the space-time cube to show cultural landscape changes. The hologram of the space-time cube provides the changes of the Royal Castle in Warsaw and their surrounding elements. The hologram therefore incorporated the different buildings of the castle, space-time prisms and space-time links to connect building elements over the years. The visual variables colour hue, colour value and transparency are mainly used to feature distinguishable space-time prisms and to show the space-time links. Different colour schemes are developed which features the characteristics of a mixed reality device. The possibilities of input actions are ranging from gaze/head movement, to gesture and voice.</p><p>The usability evaluation of the mixed reality hologram showed the overall comfort of interactions, perception of the visual components of the space-time cube and determines advantageous features and limitations of the technology. Most of the found limitations are connected to current devices, like e.g. resolution or field of view. An important aspect which came out is, that the experience the user has which such devices/technology plays an important role in successfully use and knowledge discovery from such applications.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> In this study, we visualized and analyzed log data in order to analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of “moving” and “staying activities”. As a case study, we collected and preprocessed GPS log data generated by students participating in field activities. STP (Space-Time Path) was used to visualize movement logs. “Movement” and staying places were distinguished through density-based clustering, and the time “stayed” and activities performed at staying places were examined. The problem of over-measuring time at some staying places was examined. To resolve this, the 3D Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Application with Noise (DBSCAN) was used to more accurately measure the time spent at staying places. We propose 3D DBSCAN as methodology to accurately measure spatiotemporal data. We believe this method will remain effective even as this data becomes more numerous.</p>

&lt;p&gt;Cities are increasingly vulnerable to extreme hydro-meteorological disasters, like rainfall-generated flooding. The urban floods lead to devastating damage to property and loss of human life. Extreme storms, which is the major trigger of urban flooding, thus need to be carefully examined. Our previous studies have found an increase of large rainfall intensity and variability in Shanghai City, China. In this study, we will further explore: 1) the change of spatio-temporal heterogeneity and frequency of extreme storms over decades; 2) the association between urbanization and these changes. We first extract the extreme storm catalogs for various time scales. The characteristics of space-time structure of storms in these storm catalogs are examined by using spatial analysis methods. The interannual variation of rainfall space-time structure are investigated. By using the strategy of Stochastic Storm Transposition (SST), extreme storm frequencies are generated. Various storm frequencies with different storms catalogs are then compared to show the change of magnitude of extreme storms frequencies. The correlation between the process of urbanization and the change of extreme storms is analyzed from the statistical perspective. From these results, we will have a clearer understanding of urban extreme storms and provide important implementations for assessment of flood risks in urban areas.&lt;/p&gt;

In order to electrify the transport sector, scores of charging stations are needed to incentivize people to buy electric vehicles. In urban areas with a high charging demand and little space, decision-makers are in need of planning tools that enable them to efficiently allocate financial and organizational resources to the promotion of electromobility. As with many other city planning tasks, simulations foster successful decision-making. This article presents a novel agent-based simulation framework for urban electromobility aimed at the analysis of charging station utilization and user behavior. The approach presented here employs a novel co-evolutionary learning model for adaptive charging behavior. The simulation framework is tested and verified by means of a case study conducted in the city of Munich. The case study shows that the presented approach realistically reproduces charging behavior and spatio-temporal charger utilization.

Summary The incidental mortality of seabirds in fisheries remains a serious global concern. Obtaining unbiased and accurate estimates of bycatch rates is a priority for seabird bycatch mitigation and demographic research. For measuring the capture risk of seabird interactions in fisheries, the rate of carcass retrieval from hauled gear is commonly used. However, reliability can be limited by a lack of direct capture observations and the substantial pre-haul bycatch losses known to occur, meaning incidence of seabird bycatch is underestimated. To solve this problem, a new measure (bycatch vulnerability) that links an observed interaction directly to the underlying capture event is proposed to represent the capture risk of fishery interactions by seabirds. The new measure is not affected by subsequent bycatch loss. To illustrate how to estimate and analyse bycatch vulnerability, a case study based on a long-term dataset of seabird interactions and capture confirmation is provided. Bayesian modelling and hypothesis testing were conducted to identify important bycatch risk factors. Competition was found to play a central role in determining seabird bycatch vulnerability. More competitive environments were riskier for seabirds, and larger and thus more competitive species were more at risk than smaller sized and less competitive species. Species foraging behaviour also played a role. On the other hand, no additional effect of physical oceanic condition and spatio-temporal factors on bycatch vulnerability was detected. Bycatch vulnerability is recommended as a replacement for the commonly used bycatch rate or carcass retrieval rate to measure the capture risk of an interaction. Combined with a normalized contact rate, bycatch vulnerability offers an unbiased estimate of seabird bycatch rate in pelagic longline fisheries.
