This chapter focuses on Kimora Lee Simmons and her reality television show Life in the Fab Lane. Rather than striving for a colorblind, deracinated public image, African/Asian American fashion model and designer Simmons capitalizes on both her race and gender in her advertising campaigns and television show. While her show is certainly complicit in the twin projects of capital accumulation and globalization, the chapter argues for a camp reading of her image as resistant to dominant misogynistic and essentialist representations of African American women. A detailed look at Simmons' multiracial visibility shows that, ironically, representation in itself is not enough to challenge racial categories. Instead, the show vividly demonstrates how multiraciality signifies visually through its intersections with the power hierarchies embedded in class and gender difference.

This study compares African American and Asian American adolescents in their rates of extreme community violence exposure and consequent internalizing behaviors. Using information from a national longitudinal survey this study found substantial violence exposure rates for both groups. Also, gender differences in exposure rates and adolescent reports of internalizing behaviors after violence exposure were detected. Male African American adolescents had the highest exposure rate, while female Asian American adolescents reported the highest level of internalizing behaviors. These findings suggest further research is needed to better understand the effect of violence exposure on various ethnic minority adolescents. Moreover, social workers and other professionals involved in adolescent services could use these results to improve outreach methods to vulnerable adolescents.

Chapter 1 begins by presenting an overview of the vicissitudes of descriptive representation in state legislatures for women and men from the four largest racial groups in the United States, from 1996 to 2015. The chapter then previews the book’s main finding: factors related to representation and candidate emergence, such as the relationship between district populations and descriptive representatives or political ambition, are shaped by race and gender simultaneously. To account for the persistence of underrepresentation among women and minorities, Chapter 1 then advances the intersectional model of electoral opportunity. The model accounts for external and internal, multilevel pressures that constrain and facilitate the realistic candidacy opportunities for white women, white men, men of color, and women of color. The chapter closes by discussing the necessity of studying Asian American women and men, and Latinas and Latinos, in order to better understand representation in a nation shaped by immigration and immigrant communities.

Reading Testimony, Witnessing Trauma: Confronting Race, Gender, and Violence in American Literature treats reader response to traumatic and testimonial literature written by and about African American women. Theorists emphasize the necessity of writing about—or “witnessing”—trauma to overcome it. To this critical conversation, Reading Testimony, Witnessing Trauma adds insight into the engagement of testimonial literature, articulating a theory of reading (or “dual-witnessing”) that explores how narrators and readers can witness trauma together. The book then places its original theories of traumatic reception in conversation with the African American literary tradition to speak to the histories, cultures, and traumas of African Americans, particularly the repercussions of slavery, as witnessed in American literature. This book also considers intersections of race and gender and how narrators and readers can cross such constructs to witness collectively. Reading Testimony, Witnessing Trauma’s innovative examinations of raced-gendered intersections open and speak with those works that promote dual-witnessing through the fraught (literary) histories of race and gender relations in America. To explicate how dual-witnessing converses with American literature, race theory, and gender criticism, the book analyzes emancipatory narratives by Sojourner Truth, Harriet Jacobs, and Elizabeth Keckley and novels by William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston, Margaret Walker, Toni Morrison, and Jesmyn Ward.

Using textual and discourse analysis and a semiotic, narrative approach to television texts, I explore representations of identity, specifically interracial couples. I use three interracial couples on the popular mainstream television show Heroes to analyze and explicate the ideological portrayals of gender, race and their interplay as shown on television. Taking into account historical gender and race representational studies on television, I analyze Heroes as a multiracial, current mainstream television show in the contemporary comic book genre to understand the ways interracial couples are represented.

Negative cultural images of Black people, shaped by predominantly white male television content creators, have prompted calls for more racial inclusion behind the scenes. Even though representation is the topic of scholarly conversations, little is known about what representation in television content leadership looks like or how people from diverse backgrounds influence the ways Black characters are portrayed on-screen. This chapter fills this gap by examining a prime-time television show created, written, and executive produced by a Black woman, Shonda Rhimes. Using qualitative content analysis, this chapter analyzes Shonda Rhimes’s Grey’s Anatomy to explore how intergroup interactions and depictions of race and gender on a prime-time television show may reflect the social location of its creator. The findings presented in this chapter suggest that the way Rhimes redefines culturally negative stereotypes of Black women reflects her “outsider within” social location, one she used to push back against external definitions of Black womanhood.
