New data about the occurrence of 25 species of rare lichens and 3 lichenicolous fungi in the Tatra National Park (Western Carpathians) are provided. Of these species, <em>Fellhaneropsis vezdae</em> is recorded for the first time from the whole Tatra Mts. and <em>Vezdaea stipitata</em> is new to the Polish Tatra Mts. The distribution of the species in the Tatra National Park is indicated.

Abstract The paper lists 337 species from Magurski National Park (MNP): 314 lichens, 18 lichenicolous fungi, four saprotrophic fungi and one lichenicolous myxomycete; 112 of them are new for MNP, 75 are reported for the first time for the Beskid Niski Mts, and two are new for Poland. Selected species are accompanied by taxonomic notes and remarks on their distribution in Poland and other Carpathian ranges. First records of Intralichen lichenicola, Burgoa angulosa and Verrucaria policensis and a second record of Epigloea urosperma are given for the whole Carpathian range, and Fuscidea arboricola was recorded for the first time in the Western Carpathians. Halecania viridescens and Mycomicrothelia confusa are new for the Polish Carpathians. The records of Absconditella pauxilla, Collema crispum, Licea parasitica and Rinodina griseosoralifera in MNP are their second known localities for the range. 93 species, mainly rare or threatened in Poland, were reported from MNP in the 20th century but were not refound.

This is a report of a revision of 565 herbarium specimens of lichens, lichenicolous or non-lichenized fungi and additional locality records of common species produced from a visit of the Russian-Finnish expedition to Vodlozersky National Park right after its foundation in 1991. The analyzed collection and field records represent the earliest information about the lichen flora of the territory of the park. In total, 177 species are listed including 173 lichens, 3 non-lichenized and 1 lichenicolous fungi. Xylographa rubescens is new to the Republic of Karelia. Twenty two species are reported for the first time for biogeographic province Karelia transonegensis; 47 species for the Karelian part of Vodlozersky National Park; and 17 species for the whole territory of the park.

In the years 1987&ndash;1993 research aimed at the qualitative and quantitative composition of insects inhabiting the cones of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) was carried out in the area of the Tatra National Park (Poland) for the first time. Approximately 72 thousand specimens of insects were obtained, representing 50 species from 8 orders. Kaltenbachiola strobi (Winn.), Plemeliella abietina Seitn. and Cydia strobilella L. were among the most frequently occurring species. The entomofauna of ripening, ripe and old, already lignified cones was determined, and among the insects found trophic groups were distinguished and, consequently, characterized by means of the following ecological indexes: constancy, dominance and species diversity. The qualitative and quantitative composition of spruce (P. abies) cone entomofauna was changing along with the development of the cones, due to the periods of occupancy and leaving the cones by species of varied bioecology. The entomofauna of ripe cones was characterized by higher species diversity (42 species) than that of ripening cones (25 species) and old cones (26 species).

Drought has recently become a significant topic in the Central European region. It has been observed that the drought phenomenon has severe impacts on the agriculture, hydrology, social, and economic sectors of lowland areas. This study focuses on how drought, defined as a precipitation shortage, occurs in higher altitudes of the Tatra National Park (Tatra Mts., Slovakia), which is a significant biological reserve of the Central European fauna and flora. The main goals of this research include identifying drought variability and its characteristics over the Tatra National Park in the West Carpathians (Slovakia), especially to characterizing drought variability and its spatial pattern across the Tatra National Park from 1961 to 2010 using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and standard Geographic Information System (GIS) methods. The results showed that frequency of drought occurrence has cyclic pattern with approximately 30-year period. The spatial analyses showed that precipitation shadow of the mountains influences the risk of drought occurrence. The drought-prone areas over the mountains are also identified.

Five species of lichen-forming fungi not reported yet or rare in the Carpathians have been found during lichenological researches by authors in the Tatra Mts and the Gorce Mts. Of these, Tetramelas chloroleucus has not been recorded in Poland since 19th century and, similarly to Gyalecta russula, has been found for the first time in the Polish part of the Carpathians. Absconditella celata has been discovered in the Polish Western Carpathians. Fellhanera gyrophorica has never been listed before in the Western Carpathians and Epigloea bactrospora in whole Carpathians. Notes on the taxonomy, habitat and worldwide distribution of these species (including maps of their ranges in Europe) are accompanied by photo plates illustrating their morphology and anatomy.

<em>Suillus plorans</em> is a very interesting mountain ectomycorrhizal fungus, attached to <em>Pinus cembra</em>. The paper reports its presence in the Polish Tatra Mts as a new species for Poland, discusses its previous situation among macromycetes of Poland, and its conservation status. It includes detailed descriptions of carpophores and mycorrhizae specimens collected in Poland. Basing on records of both carpophores and mycorrhizae, a map of species' occurrence in the Tatra National Park was prepared and compared with the distribution of <em>Pinus cembra</em> in this area. Identity of mycorrhizae was assessed by a morphological study and confirmed by PCR-RFLP patterns analysis of carpophore and mycorrhizal mycelium.

<em>A. lasiocarpum</em> has provoked a long-standing debate over its systematic and geographic status. Present taxonomic and chorological studies offer a proposal for the solution of these problems. In their result, a taxon described by Zapałowicz (1908) was rediscovered, now treated as <em>A. lasiocarpum</em> subsp. <em>kotulae</em> comb. nov. It occurs far beyond hitherto admitted borders of <em>A. lasiocarpum</em> subsp. <em>lasiocarpum</em>, reaching the Sanok-Jasło Basin, the Tatra Mts. and Babia Góra Mt. in the Western Carpathians, and Podolye on Ukraine. A hybrid between<em> A. lasiocarpum</em> and <em>A. variegatum</em> subsp. <em>variegatum</em> was also described for the first time. The nothospecies, <em>A</em>. x <em>pawlowskii</em> nothosp. nov., occurs in scattered localities in the Western Carpathians: in Poland (Beskid Niski, Tatras, Gorce Mts. and Babia Góra Mt.) and in Slovakia (Slovenské Rudohorie, Nizke Tatry Mts. and Muranska Planina Plateau), within the range of <em>A. variegatum</em> subsp. <em>variegatum</em>. The new (notho) taxa enable more precise shaping the geographical borders of both <em>A. lasiocarpum</em> subsp. <em>lasiocarpum</em> and <em>A. variegatum</em> subsp. <em>variegatum</em> in the Carpathians.

<em>Coronilla vaginalis</em> Lam., a Central European montane species, is reported for the first time from Poland, from the Tatra Mountains. A general map of the taxon’s distribution is given, and the location of the newly recorded stand is shown on a map of Poland and the Tatra National Park. Its habitat, calcareous grassland of the order <em>Seslerietalia</em>, is characterized in detail.

Two species of parasitic fungi new for Poland belonging to the genus <em>Ramularia</em> Unger: <em>Rumularia cortusae</em> Petr. (on <em>Cortusa malthioli</em> L.) and <em>R. crassiuscula</em> (Unger) U. Braun (on <em>Delphinium oxysepalum</em> Borb. et Pax), collected in the Tatra National Park (Western Carpathians), are described, illustrated and their distribution is given.
