Granular cell tumor is benign neoplasm rarely diagnosed among young children and adolescents. The tumor developed commonly within mucous membrane of upper airways, but precise etiology is not known. Treatment is based on surgical resection of tumor and intense follow up due to risk of recurrence and malignant transformation.

Congenital Granular Cell Tumor

Congenital granular cell tumors are infrequently occurring masses occurring on a neonate’s gingiva/alveolus. These lesions are benign with no noted malignant transformation, and treatment of excision is based on its effect on the neonate’s respiratory ability and/or nutritional intake. The purpose of this review is to discuss a case of a congenital granular cell tumor and its treatment and review of the literature including demographics, histopathology, and operative treatment.

Background Granular cell tumor is a benign tumor originating from Schwann cells. Children and adolescents are rarely affected. We report a 9-year-old female who presented with a cutaneous granular cell tumor on the chest. Objective To determine the incidence of granular cell tumor and proportion of tumors seen in the pediatric population at our center. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the surgical pathology records from 1997 to 2014 at our center. Results The incidence of granular cell tumor is five cases per million person-years (95% CI 3-8). Of the 18 cases, 9 cases occurred in the pediatric population. Conclusion Fifty percent of granular cell tumor cases diagnosed at our center occurred in the pediatric population. Granular cell tumor may not be as rare as we expect in the pediatric population.

Abstract BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE Granular cell tumors (GCTs) of the sellar and suprasellar regions are rare tumors that may be managed surgically by multiple strategies. The technical approaches for these tumors have rarely been described in the literature. CLINICAL PRESENTATION We introduce the case of a patient presenting with dizziness and headaches who was found to have a suprasellar and retrochiasmatic mass and eventually underwent surgical resection. We discuss the characteristics of this tumor, and the current state of the literature. Also included are details regarding the surgical approach utilized in this case, and a discussion of the various surgical approaches for this type of tumor. CONCLUSION There are several approaches for the surgical resection of suprasellar GCTs, and the approach utilized may depend on patient and/or surgeon considerations. Patient-specific considerations must be made to ensure maximal safe resection of these lesions.

Common Site

Gastrointestinal granular cell tumors are uncommon. The most common site of gastrointestinal granular cell tumor (GCT) is esophagus. We report a case of esophageal GCT incidentally diagnosed by endoscopy. The lesion was evaluated by endoscopic ultrasonography and resected using the endoscopic technique without complication.
