Since 1883 I have repeatedly endeavoured to discover some refined and generally applicable method by means of which the fine fibrillæ, or “connecting threads,” traversing the cell membrane might be identified with certainty, and the fact of their existence settled beyond dispute. I was also anxious to be in a position to investigate the development of the threads in endosperm tissue. My researches met with little encouragement until 1894, when I succeeded in finding a new method, by means of which I obtained excellent results with the young developing endosperm tissue of Tamus communis . This I have further elaborated, so that either the original method, or modifications of it, can be applied to tissues generally.

In the course of my investigations in connection with the forthcoming paper on “ The Histology of the Cell Wall with special Reference to the Mode of Connection of Cells,” certain observations and conclusions concerning the origin and development of the wall-threads and cell-wall have come to light which seem to be of sufficient interest to warrant my bringing them to the notice of the Society without delay.

1. Spores of the Bacillus welchii group of bacteria were found on 100 per cent of the uniforms of Belgian soldiers who had come directly from the trenches, and in the meshes of all the samples examined of the new cloth from which the uniforms were made. 2. In fifteen out of twenty fresh war wounds members of this group of bacteria were found. Of the fifteen patients, only three later developed gas gangrene. Once the spores of Bacillus welchii have been carried into a wound the deep-lying lacerated muscle tissue appears to be the most important factor in the onset of gas gangrene. 3. Bacillus welchii is able to grow and produce gas in broth containing up to 40 per cent saccharose. Some strains were able to multiply and produce gas in 50 per cent saccharose broth; but none of those examined were able to grow when the concentration of the sugar reached 60 per cent. 4. The bubbling of pure oxygen through milk or dextrose broth cultures of Bacillus welchii has a definite depressor action on the production of gas. This does not appear to be-due to a reduced number of organisms in the culture.

In a preliminary communication on the development of mouse chimaerae formed from fused eggs (Tarkowski, 1961) three cases of intersexuality were reported among newborn animals. Sexing was based exclusively on macroscopic examination of the reproductive system. The present paper deals with the microscopic structure of this system in chimaeric hermaphrodites, with special reference to the structure of the gonads. The occurrence of intersexes among animals developed from fused eggs was considered as one of the proofs of their chimaeric constitution (Tarkowski, 1961). Abnormalities similar to those displayed by these chimaerae have been described in the mouse and related rodents in sporadic spontaneous cases of hermaphroditism. However, while the genesis of the latter is unknown, there are strong indications that hermaphroditism among chimaerae develops on the basis of sex-chromosome mosaicism. This type of mosaicism can be expected a priori to occur in a number of individuals developed from two eggs randomly selected.
