This special issue of JIS presents the extended versions of the best full papers of the Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems (IHC 2018). For this issue, the seven papers selected as best papers from the 42 presented at the conference were invited to submit an extended version of their work. It is worth noting that the extended versions contain original content or new contributions when compared to their original IHC 2018 version, and they were submitted to a new and independent review process. IHC 2018 highlighted the influence and importance of cultural issues in the design of computer systems, as well as the need to be creative and innovative in designing new forms of interaction, design, and system evaluations with its theme “Interaction, Culture, and Creativity”. The papers presented in this issue tap into IHC 2018’s theme and represent the broad range of topics being investigated in HCI in Brazil, as well as bring original and relevant contributions to the state-of-the art in each of their topics.

This special issue of Journal on Interactive Systems is dedicated to Human-Computer Interaction. It contains a selection of five of the best full papers presented at the 13th Brazilian Symposium on Human Factors in Computing Systems (IHC 2014), held in Foz do Iguaçu, from October 27th to 31th, 2014. As extended versions of the original conference papers, these works present original content or new contributions when compared to their previous versions and underwent a whole new and independent review process.IHC 2014 brought the theme "Frontiers of Interaction", aiming to motivate the discussion of ideas and knowledge about diversity in HCI. The theme motivates us to think about the interdisciplinary nature of area. It also refers to the challenges of expanding horizons in order to encompass the diversity of users, respecting their differences and their distinct learning styles. Besides, it has been a great motivation for discussing new forms of interaction that break some of the traditional patterns of knowledge that we were producing. Lastly, the theme also fosters intercultural interaction, reflecting on our knowledge and our function on cultural diversity inherent to HCI phenomena. Thus, papers of this special issue present some interesting discussions about this diversity.

Addressing mental health issues is a core concern in the treatment of people with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and their families. Mental health issues are widespread after TBI and arise whether the injury was sustained in civilian or conflict contexts. In the Guest Editorial, Simon Fleminger outlines key issues and conundrums that arise in the intertwining of mental health problems and TBI, as well as the importance of integrating the treatment of mental health conditions into neurorehabilitation.

We are thrilled to present this special issue on “Queer Affects,” which explores a range of topics and analytical approaches that have rarely appeared in the pages of IJMES but reflect vital emerging discussions in diverse subfields of Middle East studies. That so many contributors hail from literary disciplines, which have tended to be underrepresented in the journal, also makes this a landmark issue for us. We thank guest editors Hanadi Al-Samman and Tarek El-Ariss for proposing the special issue, gathering the original collection of manuscript submissions, and introducing the final group of six articles we present here, all of which have gone through the standard IJMES peer review process. We also acknowledge the anonymous reviewers, some of whom read more than one article for this issue, for their perceptive evaluations. We are grateful to Huda Lufti for permitting us to use a photograph of her artwork, “Lipstick and Moustache (2010),” as this issue's cover art.
