ABSTRACTOrganic and polymeric materials have emerged in recent years as candidates for advanced device and systems applications. This interest has arisen from the promise of extraordinary optical, structural, and mechanical properties of certain organic materials, and from the fundamental success of molecular design performed to create new materials. Our approach to the problem is to develop an understanding of the molecular basis of non-linear optical activity, incorporate the most promising candidates into tractable polymers, and evaluate these materials in device format. This paper will review some of the recent developments in the NLO materials effort at Hoechst Celanese.

ABSTRACTSecond-order nonlinear optical polymers can be divided into four groups regarding arrangements of chromophore dipoles in polymer backbones, namely, side-chain polymers, random, head-to-tail, and head-to-head Main-chain polymers. A variety of polymers with the aforementioned configurations have been designed and synthesized from functionalized amino-nitro azobenzene chromophores. Poling processes of these polymeric materials have been investigated by in-situ poling and second-harmonic generation detection.

Molecular diphenylamine derivative containing two azochromophores has been synthesized. Compound showed formation of stable amorphous glassy phase with good optical quality. Functionalization with bulky trityl- group was carried to further improve physical properties of material. Two types of azochromophore containing polymeric materials, azochromophore in side chain containing aromatic polyether and azochromophores in both, main and side chain, containing polyester were also synthesized. Samples for holographic recording were prepared using spin coating technique from saturated chloroform solution. Holographic recording experiments have been made using 532 and 633 nm lasers. All compounds showed ability of forming laser induced diffraction gratings.

ABSTRACTNew oxadiazole-based polymeric materials have been synthesized either as side chain copolymers with polymethacrylate or as main chain copolymers carrying solubilizing elements such as hexafluoropropylidene or meta-linked aromatic spacer units. Many of these materials exhibit blue luminescence in the solid state. The materials have been evaluated by photoluminescence and cyclic voltammetry studies, and as the electron transporting layer in a two-layer electroluminescent device with poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) as the emissive layer. The major conclusion is that these materials function by providing large heterojunction offsets at the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) which block the passage of holes through the device.
