Purpose – The recommendation of structural standards, e.g. PN-B-03002, shows a need to control the production quality of wall-elements; the quality control demands suitable guidelines to fit the requirements of the current mass-production of the wall-elements, then, the structural standard recognizes the need of improving the methods to identify the real elements quality. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed inspection methodology corresponds to assessment models that combine the numerical and symptomatic models to evaluate the critical levels of wall-elements, based on non-intrusive tests through the measurement of a set of signals, using the Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA)-based techniques. Findings – The presented work is developed with an approach that applies advanced calculating techniques used for the structural analysis in civil engineering focused on the technical state assessment. Originality/value – The paper proposes a diagnostic methodology that can be added to the current regulations and standards based on EMA techniques.

Compared with hot embossing, microfluidic chips injection molding is higher efficiency process and more suitable for mass production, but the quality control for injection molding is much more complex. Experiments indicate that the incomplete replication of the micro-channel and the sink mark for microfluidic chips are the chief defects to the molding. Simulation and theoretical analysis show that the stagnant flow of the melt in micro-channel and the shrinkage difference of the chips in different directions are the main reasons for molding defect. A set of new methods that how to control process parameter, design mold, and select polymer material is proposed to reduce or avoid the defects.

The paper is the result of a joint effort by Renold Ltd. and Saab Scania dealing with the development of a transfer drive system for a production Saab front wheel drive automobile. The drive consists of three simple roller chains staggered third of a tooth combined with automatic chain tensioning and adjustment. The design of the transfer drive is described - comparisons with gears - bearing arrangements - resulting economies etc. Development of the chain system is described together with details of automatic tensioning and load measurement. The Saab development program is dealt with including high-speed rig and road testing plus noise evaluation and assessment. The mass production aspect, quality control, and experience in service is also covered.

AbstractStiffened shells and plates are widely used in engineering. Their performance is highly influenced by the arrangement, or layout, of stiffeners on the base shell or plate and the geometric features, or topology, of these stiffeners. Moreover, modular design is beneficial, since it allows for increased quality control and mass production. In this work, a method is developed that simultaneously optimizes the topology of stiffeners and their layout on a base shell or plate. This is accomplished by introducing a fixed number of modular stiffeners, which are subject to density-based topology optimization and a mapping of these modules to a ground structure. To illustrate potential applications, several stiffened plates and shell examples are presented. All examples demonstrated that the proposed method is able to generate clear topologies for any number of modules and a distinct layout of the stiffeners on the base shell or plate.
