The study assessed the effectiveness and utilization of field trip as a method of teaching and learning chemistry at senior secondary schools in Owerri Municipal Council Area of Imo State, Nigeria. The population of the study was all the 4664 chemistry students in the government-owned secondary schools in the Council. Simple random sampling technique was used to select five schools and 20% of the numbers of chemistry students in each of the sampled schools were used to obtain the sample size of 288 chemistry students. Four research questions were posed for the study. The research was descriptive survey design and questionnaires were used to elicit relevant data while mean rating was used for the analyses of the data obtained for the study. The results gave grand means of 3.14, 1.70, 3.51 and 3.21 for research questions 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively. These findings showed that field trip is interactive, motivating and provides opportunity for chemistry students to widen their practical knowledge of industrial application of chemistry; chemistry teachers do not utilize field trip in teaching and learning of chemistry; lack of chemistry and chemical process-based industries, time constraint, transportation cost/risk, and the organizing process are the factors that influence effective utilization of field trip. Based on the findings, it was recommended that school field trips should reinforce the curriculum and they should be arranged at every level of the Department at various times, criterion based set of guidelines for planning and conducting successful field trips should be developed; workshops and seminars should be organized for teachers on the importance of field trip and its utilization in the teaching and learning of chemistry. Again, when considering a field trip, teachers are advised to first consult with their administrator regarding existing school board policies and follow that recommended procedure. School authorities should assist in the provision of funds or transportation for field trips.

The study investigated the availability and utilization of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of chemistry at the senior secondary schools in Owerri Municipal Council Area of Imo state. 1948 chemistry students in senior secondary (SS) two classes and 32 chemistry teachers at the ten government-owned secondary schools formed the population of the study. A simple random sampling technique was used to select five schools, and 20% was used to obtain the sample size of 168 chemistry students; but all the 32 chemistry teachers were used since it is a manageable size. Three research questions were posed. The research was a descriptive survey design; checklists and questionnaire were used to elicit relevant data for the study. Mean rating was used for the analysis of the data obtained. The findings showed that many instructional materials were available, but they are not adequately utilized. Chemistry teachers do not appropriately improvise instructional materials (when not available) in the teaching and learning of chemistry. Based on the findings, it was recommended that adequate instructional materials for the teaching of chemistry at the senior secondary schools in Owerri Municipal Council should be provided by the various stakeholders in education; the use of instructional materials by teachers should be made compulsory in the teaching and learning of all topics in chemistry at our senior secondary schools, and this must be enforced through periodical monitoring by the school authority. Teachers should improvise where instructional materials are not available. Government should provide funds to motivate teachers as regards improvisation and should organize seminars, workshops, and conferences for chemistry teachers on how to improvise and make effective use of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of chemistry.

Students’ poor Financial Accounting performance in senior secondary schools is worrisome and induces youths to engage in several social vices. An attempt to curb the menace and improve students’ performance led this study to assess the instructional resources and effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Adopting the descriptive survey research design, the population of the study comprised 2,492 senior secondary schools 1 and 2 students and 10 teachers of Financial Accounting under Education District IV in Lagos State, Nigeria. 300 students and all the 10 teachers eventually emerged as samples using Checkmarket Sample Size Calculator at 5% margin and 95% confidence level. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire that obtained Cronbach’s Alpha=0.90, and analysed using descriptive analysis and t-test at α=0.05 level of significance. The results showed that the teachers of Financial Accounting were not using activity-based pedagogical strategies. Most of the instructional materials necessary for the effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting were inadequate and malfunctioning. Therefore, Financial Accounting teachers are strongly encouraged to apply innovative and experiential learning strategies in teaching and learning. Furthermore, adequate infrastructure and modern equipment in the schools will create better learning opportunities for students.
