Cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) has been commercially developed since the late 1990's in Newfoundland and Labrador. At that time, the insect fauna of the extensive stands of native, wild cranberry was not known, although these might provide a reservoir for pests to move to commercial sites. The occurrence and distribution of cranberry-feeding insects were assessed in wild stands to help cranberry growers prepare for the insect pests they might have to manage. Adults of the cranberry fruitworm, Acrobasis vaccinii were recovered in pheromone traps and larvae found in berries. The fruitworm was common and widespread. Moths of the cranberry girdler, Chrysoteuchia topiaria were caught in pheromone traps, but larvae were not recovered from plant or soil samples. There was no evidence of the black-headed fireworm, Rhopobota naevana, the cranberry weevil, Anthonomus musculus, the red-headed flea beetle, Systena frontalis, or the cranberry tipworm, Dasineura oxycoccana, serious cranberry pests in other areas. However, larvae of the lingonberry fruitworm, Grapholita libertina, were found infesting cranberry at one site in 1998. Of the species found in this study, A. vaccinii probably represents the most serious threat to the industry.

Shorea robusta Gaertn. f. (Dipterocarpaceae), commonly known as sal, is one of the most important timbers of India both ecologically and economically. It is of Indian origin, widely distributed in central and north India and constitutes an important ecosystem, which provides cool and calm environment rich in biodiversity. This tree species has a highest number of insect fauna among the forest trees. Of about 346 insects recorded on sal, about 155 species of insects belonging to the order Lepidoptera (105), Coleoptera (31), Thysanoptera (9), Hemiptera (4), Orthoptera (4), Ephemeroptera (1) and Isoptera (1) are associated with living tree. The major insect pests of sal are, ‘seed and seedling borer’ Pammene theristis Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Eucosmidae), feeding on seed while they are on the tree; Sitophilus rugicollis Casey (Coleoptera : Curculionidae), damage seed either on the forest floor or during storage; white grubs such as Holotrichia spp. (Coleoptera : Scarabaeidae), which feed on the root system of the plants in nurseries and beetles feed on the foliage; defoliators such as Caviria sericea Moore (Lepidoptera : Lymantriidae), Lymantria mathura Moore (Lepidoptera : Lymantriidae), Paectes subapicalis Walker (Lepidoptera : Noctuidae), Trabala vishnou Lefebvre (Lepidoptera : Lasiocampidae), which feed on the leaves; stem borer such as Hoplocerambyx spinicornis Newman (Coleoptera : Cerambycidae) and sap sucker, such as Drosicha stebbingi Green (Hemiptera : Coccidae). Termites, such as Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren (Isoptera : Rhinotermitidae) and timber borers, such as Sinoxylon anale and S. crassum (Coleoptera : Bostrychidae), damage sal timber in dying, felled or stored logs in depots.

Efficacy and profitability of insecticidal management practices using different insecticides were tested against insect pests of mungbean at Pulses Research Center, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh during two consecutive seasons of kharif-1 2013 and 2014. Insect infestations were reduced significantly by the application of synthetic insecticides. Spraying of Imidachloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) @ 0.5 ml/l of water showed the best efficacy in reducing flower infestation and thrips population followed by Fipronil (Regent 50 SC). Spraying of Thiamethoxam + Chlorantraneliprol (Voliam flexi 300 SC) @ 0.5 ml/l of water showed the best efficacy in reducing pod borer and flea beetle infestations. Spraying of Fipronil (Regent 50 SC) performed highest efficacy against stemfly infestation. The yield and the highest net return were obtained from Voliam flexi 300 SC, the highest benefit was obtained from Regent 50 SC treated plots. This might be due to the higher cost of Voliam flexi that reduced the profit margin and showed the lower marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) compared to Regent. Therefore, considering the efficacy and benefit, spraying of Fipronil (Regent 50 SC) @ 0.5 ml/l is the most profitable insecticidal management approach against insect pests of mungbean followed by Imidachloprid (Imitaf 20 SL) at the same dose.Bangladesh J. AbstractPheromone traps have been widely used for monitoring insect pests in tobacco factories and warehouses. Generally, these traps are placed 10-20 m apart, although a precise scientific rationale for this practice is not available. We examined the effect of trap density on the recovery and localization of tobacco moths released in a 42.3 × 36.5 × 4.0 m tobacco warehouse compartment (1540 m2). In single-trap experiments (0.06 traps/100m2), 15-51% (33% on average) of the released male moths were captured. The capture ratio was not correlated with the distance between the trap and the release point; the highest catch rate was attained when a trap was placed at the most distant position: 47 m from the release point. Capture data from experiments using groups of 4-23 traps revealed that the highest catch rates were always attained by the trap nearest the release point when more than eight traps (0.5 traps/100 m2) were set. These results indicate that the number of traps required for monitoring purposes should be changed - one trap is sufficient for detecting the presence or absence of infestation in a 1540 m2 warehouse compartment (0.06 traps/100 m2); more than eight traps (0.5 traps/100 m2) should be set for localization, allowing the location of the infestation to be inferred from the trap with the highest catch rate.

AbstractAnnual assessments from 1953 to 1977 of insect damage to the preharvest crop in apple orchards in Nova Scotia show a general decline in injury, except for 1966–68. Laspeyresia pomonella (L.) and fruit chewing insects (chiefly Operophtera brumata (L.), Alsophila pometaria (L.), Orthosia hibisci Guenee, Lithophane spp., and Xylena spp.) caused the greatest amount of fruit damage. Dysaphis plantaginea (Pass.), Campylomma verbasci (Meyer), and Atractotomus mali (Meyer) were serious in some years. In integrated control program orchards the proportion of fruit damaged was twice that in preventative pesticide orchards. Fruit destined for processing had more injury than fruit destined for the fresh fruit market.Population levels of the major insect pests and their natural enemies were monitored regularly and gave early warning of threatening levels of pests. Generally predator population levels were high during periods of selective insecticide use but were low when widely toxic insecticides were introduced into the integrated control program.

AbstractTwo parasitoids, identified as a species each of Aprostocetus Westwood (near Aprostocetusmarylandensis (Girault)) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Platygaster Latreille (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae), were discovered in cranberry shoots (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton (Ericaceae)) infested with cranberry tipworm, Dasineura oxycoccana (Johnson), on a farm in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Canada. Parasitoids emerged from ∼18% of collected shoots in 2009, when Aprostocetus sp. was more numerous, and in 2010, when Platygaster sp. predominated. In 2009, Aprostocetus sp. was the only parasitoid species present in May and June, and predominated until late August, when Playtgaster sp. became prevalent. In 2010, Platygaster sp. was more numerous throughout June and July; numbers of Aprostocetus sp. increased in late July and early August. The parasitoids were naturally present despite applications of the insecticide diazinon.

Field experiments were conducted at faculty of Agriculture teaching and research farm, university of Maiduguri in 2010 and 2011 rainy seasons. The aim was to investigate the impact of intercropping sorghum with okra on the incidence of flea beetle of okra (Podagrica spp) in the semi-Arid zone of Nigeria. The results showed that sole crop okra suffered flea beetle attack which affected its growth, fruit formation, fruit weights and fruit yield. Intercropping okra with sorghum significantly reduced the flea beetle populations, leaf damage caused by Podagrica spp (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). While increasing number of leaves for photosynthetic activities, plant height, fruit formation, fresh fruit weight and total fruit yield. The study concluded that okra intercropping at 1:1, 1:2 and 2:2 are the most efficient and productive intercrop systems in flea beetle management. Okra intercropping with cereal sorghum was found to be good for sustainable agriculture and organic farming in Nigeria due to its numerous advantages, particularly with respect to insect pests’ control.
