ABSTRACTThird-order nonlinear optical properties of lyotropic liquid crystal poly(1,4-phenylene-2,6-benzobisthiazole), PBT, solutions are studied by third harmonic generation measurements. Besides the enhancement observed for this coefficient with respect to the pure PBT, coupling is observed between the mean filed nematic director n and the incident fundamental polarization B0. Different geometries, with respect to the relative orientation of B0 and n, provided different harmonic Maker Fringe Patterns. These data are compared using refractive index measurements, independently achieved on these materials, and necessary for Maker Fringe analysis.

ABSTRACTNew poly(vinyl ethers) with pendant groups exhibiting nonlinear optical properties were synthesized: 4-cyano and 4-nitro-4'-(alkoxy) azobenzene substituted poly(vinyl ethyl ether), copolymers and 4-dicyano or 4-cyano-4-carbomethoxyvi-nyl-4'-(alkoxy)benzene substituted poly(vinyl ethyl ether). Films spincoated from these polymers were poled by a positive corona discharge just above their T9 (as measured by DSC). The second order susceptibilities of tne films were derived from full-angle Maker fringe patterns at 1064 nm. Susceptibilities x(2) zzz as high as 23×10−9 esu were measured.

The second-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities χ(2) of two isomeric polymers containing an azo dye, Disperse Red 19, were determined by the first-order electroabsorption spectroscopy (EAS), and compared with values previously obtained by SHG measurements. The para-polymer was found to have higher susceptibility than the corresponding meta-polymer. χ(2) were found to be 5–6 × 10-8 esu, which are comparable to those obtained by the Maker Fringe method.
