One of the primary issues with many product design and development processes today is having a good balance between the elements of form and function. While all products must be able to perform their intended functions, considerations of aesthetic features are also necessary for them to be accepted as a good quality design. However, most available design and development processes of consumer products have been more focused on achieving the functional aspects and have tended to treat the aesthetic aspects as less crucial features. This approach has led to many failed functional products in the market, as their physical design lacks appealing factors to targeted users. To improve the situation, a new product design and development framework is proposed in this study to better facilitate designers or engineers in creating an all-rounded quality product design. This new method is developed based on the findings from a survey conducted among engineering students, who are future product design engineers, in order to identify and also resolve issues with the current methods that they typically apply for their design tasks. All in all, the new proposed method is fundamentally tailored to offer a structured guide for developing beautiful and useful products based on a semantic design approach.

ABSTRACTThe rotorcraft industry needs Virtual Engineering first to ensure decisions made early in the life-cycle, at the requirements capture and preliminary design phases for example, are reliably informed. Later, in design, development and qualification, Virtual Prototypes can become the centre of attention for critical reviews and, ultimately, certification itself. A significant challenge is to ensure that model fidelity is good enough, not only for supporting design decisions but also in establishing requirements based on sufficiently mature technologies. This international conference, Rotorcraft virtual engineering; supporting life-cycle engineering through design and development, test and certification and operations and co-sponsored by the RAeS/AHS/A3F/DGLR/AIDAA addressed these themes and this paper reviews and assesses the value of the various contributions.

With the development of information technology, the instrumentation and control system of nuclear power plant nowadays rely heavily on the massive and complex software to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the power plant. The improvement of the software design and development for the safety systems has been a research focus for its decisive impact on the nuclear safety. The framework of the software design and development for reactor protection system in High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor-Pebble bed Module was introduced in this paper. Firstly, during the design period, in addition to multichannel redundancy, grouping of protection variables and diverse 2-out-of-4 logics were adopted by different subsystems of each channel in case of common cause failure. Then a series of development characteristics together with strict software verification and validation were performed. Thirdly, during the software test period, an improved software reliability growth model based on the Goel-Okumoto model according to the analysis of fault severity was proposed to help in estimating the reliability of the software product and identifying the software release time.
