AbstractAcute pancreatitis is one of the major gastrointestinal conditions that lead to around 300,000 hospital admissions per year in the United States. While mild inflammation of the pancreas is often managed conservatively, progression of the disease process to necrosis significantly increases the overall morbidity and mortality and often requires surgical or other interventional techniques for management. The purpose of this review is to describe the role of percutaneous drainage for the management of complicated pancreatitis.

Lung pneumatoceles represent a potential life-threatening complication of pneumonia in infants, especially when they do not spontaneously reabsorb. In this category of patients, scientific literature lacks and no consensus guidelines for management have been proposed. Imaging plays a key role in the diagnosis, characterization, and follow-up of pneumatoceles. Image-guided percutaneous drainage can be considered a safe and effective treatment in children, although it is not widely recognized in newborns and infants. The aim of this case series review is to describe the main CT features of complicated or persistent pneumatoceles in infants and to highlight the potential role of image-guided percutaneous drainage as an effective approach for their treatment. Successful management of four infants affected by pneumonia-related pneumatoceles with percutaneous drainage is presented.

This chapter covers gynaecological cancers and includes information on cervical, endometrial, ovarian, and vaginal and vulval cancers. It also covers epidemiology, molecular biology and pathology. Surgical management focuses on risk adapted diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and includes laparoscopic lymph node and tumour surgery. The role of primary, adjuvant or neoadjuvant radiotherapy is described consisting of external beam therapy or (image guided) brachytherapy or combined treatment, also as concomitant radiochemotherapy. Medical management is outlined comprising cytotoxic chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and targeted drugs with their different role in neoadjuvant, adjuvant and primary treatment. Multidisciplinary management is described for complex cases of cervix, endometrium and ovarian cancer.

Image-guided percutaneous drainage is an excellent minimally invasive method for dealing with infectious complications in the pediatric population. A thorough understanding of drainage procedures in children can often lead to improved patient outcomes. Indications for percutaneous drainage will be reviewed, including abscesses related to appendicitis, post-surgical abscess formation, and abscesses related to Crohn's disease. This pictorial essay will help the radiologist better understand the common etiologies of abscesses in children that may require percutaneous drainage, the special considerations for catheter placement, patient preparation, and anesthesia or sedation issues unique to the pediatric population.
