Background: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMSP) is common in older people with multimorbidity (MM). Given the complex etiology of CMSP, it is worthwhile to explore the meanings attached to an individual and its interaction with MM. The study aimed to explore the meanings underneath the experience of CMSP and MM, to generate new insight on the support of pain management in the elderly population.   Methods: 20 eligible subjects aged between 65 and 80 were recruited through purposive sampling. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted, with data transcript, coded and analyzed using grounded theory approach. Results: Quotes evolved on the interaction between CMSP and MM, with participants expressed worries of pain may affect disease control. Three themes emerged which included the impact of CMSP on the physical and psychosocial well-being among the elderly with MM, the barriers to pain care in the community, and the perception and strategies on pain management. Conclusions: Older people with CMSP and MM were suffering from a significant physical and psychological impact on their well-being. Self-care remains a preferred adjunct in pain management; support should be strengthened at individual (education) and community (urban development) level.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to describe the scientific evidence on the use of auriculotherapy to reduce chronic musculoskeletal pain in adults and the elderly. Methods: integrative literature review conducted in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences, SciVerse Scopus and MEDLINE databases (via National Library of Medicine), in March 2019, with no time frame. Results: 14 original scientific articles were analyzed, 64.3% of which were classified with level of evidence 2. All productions show the benefit of auriculotherapy in reducing chronic musculoskeletal pain, especially in the lumbar spine (42.9%). The treatment was developed in one or more sessions, using semi-permanent needles (42.9%) and electro-auriculotherapy (21.4%). Conclusions: auriculotherapy was effective in reducing chronic musculoskeletal pain, showing itself as an alternative to be used for the promotion and recovery of individuals' health.

Aims Chronic musculoskeletal pain is among the major problems of old age. An effective nursing intervention in relieving pain is the use of local herbal ointments. The present study evaluated the effect of purslane ointment on chronic musculoskeletal pain in the elderly. Methods & Materials This was a randomized, blinded clinical trial study and conducted in 2018, on 60 elderly residents of Gonabad City, Iran. The patients were recruited by convenience sampling method. The samples were randomly assigned to the purslane and placebo groups. The instrument used in this study was McGill pain questionnaire; its validity and reliability were confirmed in previous studies. The intervention was conducted for two weeks. The obtained data were analyzed by SPSS and at a significance level of P<0.05. Findings The collected results suggested that the purslane ointment could effectively reduce the sensory and emotional dimensions of pain, compared with placebo. The severity of pain in the elderly was significantly lower in the purslane group after two weeks of intervention, compared to the Pre-test phase. The mean score of pain in two sensory and emotional dimensions was not significantly different between the two genders. Conclusion The use of purslane ointment is effective in reducing musculoskeletal pain in the elderly; therefore, the use of this plant can be considered as a safe and cost-effective intervention by nurses.
