<p>Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) propellant were prepared with different content of Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite, and the mechanical, thermal and energetic performances were studied. Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite exhibited good compatibility with HTPB and dioctyl sebacate (DOS) through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests. Mechanical experiments show that the mechanical properties of HTPB propellant could be improved by the addition of a small quantity of Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite, compared with the absence of Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite. For example, with the addition of 3% Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite, the tensile strength and elongation of propellant had the increase of 15.3% and 32.1%, respectively. Thermal analysis indicated that the decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) in HTPB propellant could be catalyzed by Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite, the high-temperature exothermic peak of AP was shifted to lower temperature by 70.8 °C when the content of Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite was 5%, and the heat released was enhanced by 70%. At the same time, the heat of explosion of HTPB propellant could also be enhanced by the addition of Al/B/Fe2O3 nano thermite. Copyright © 2016 BCREC GROUP. AbstractDissipative particle dynamics and molecular simulations were carried out to investigate the phase behaviors of glycidyl azide polymer (GAP)/hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) polymer blend in dioctyl sebacate (DOS), and mixture of DOS and bis(2,2-dinitropropyl)formal/acetal (A3), respectively. The rheology of GAP/HTPB propellant slurry plasticized by A3/DOS was studied. First, single-phase aggregations of GAP and HTPB appear slightly in A3/DOS whereas it is conspicuous in DOS, which results from the small surface tension between the GAP/HTPB plasticized by A3/DOS and the weak thermal diffusion of this blend. Furthermore, with the plasticizing ratio (po/pl) increasing to 1.2, the GAP/HTPB propellant slurry plasticized by A3/DOS exhibits small viscosity and yield stress, and the Newtonian-like behavior of slurry improves its manufacturability. Finally, integral GAP/HTPB-based propellant can be obtained using A3/DOS as plasticizers.

Both better mechanical and rheological properties are pursued for composite solid propellant. In this work, varying proportions of a modified hyperbranched polyester (MHBPE) were added to HTPE/AP/Al propellant. The static tensile property as one kind of mechanical properties of MHBPE/HTPE/AP/Al propellant were found to be superior to those of blank HTPE/AP/Al propellant as a result of the entanglement and interpenetration of molecular chains caused by the introduction of the hyperbranched structure. Evaluations on the related improved creep resistance and stress relaxation performance further demonstrated the advantages of introduction of MHBPE to HTPE/AP/Al propellant. Rheological properties of HTPE/AP/Al propellant with and without MHBPE during the casting process were investigated and compared and the results confirmed the improvement benefiting from low viscosity and loose void structure. Thus, modified hyperbranched polyester provided a novel route to potentially meet the requirements for propellant manufacturing and applications.
