Abstract Solar thermal energy systems are future sustainable solutions for both domestic as well as industrial use. Solar thermal systems operating in medium temperature range (373-673 K) require concentrated solar-thermal heating (CSH). In this work, a comprehensive numerical tool is developed to design and study multipurpose on-sun CSH system. The model uses a combined Monte-Carlo ray tracing, finite difference method and all heat transfer modes. The model is validated with in-house experiment, which demonstrates its predictive capability. Next, the tool is used to optimise the cavity receiver geometry and predict the performance of the optimised CSH system under different direct normal irradiance (DNI) conditions. A CSH system using Therminol D12 as HTF is presented. Therminol D12 HTF based system is predicted to take longer time than the system using water as HTF, for heating water to a specified temperature because of the heat exchanger effectiveness. However, the designed CSH system using Therminol D12 can attain higher temperatures than water without pressurization and through the heat exchanger can be used as multipurpose system suitable for cooking, laundry, sterilization, process industry etc.

In a moderate, transitory climate, to prevent freezing of outdoor pipes and collectors in solar thermal systems, anti-freezing fluids are commonly used. There is little experience of using water without any additives as a solar thermal fluid in such a climate. Based on these findings, to fill the knowledge gap this article presents the long-term results of thermal performance and anti-freeze protection of a solar heating system with heat pipe evacuated tube collectors with water as a solar thermal fluid. The operation of this system under real conditions was analysed for five years in southern Poland. The annual value of solar insolation ranged from 839 to almost 1000 kWh/m2. The monthly efficiency of the solar collectors from March to October was usually higher than 25%, and the lowest was between November and January. The anti-freeze protection system consumed annually from 7 to 13% of the heat generated by the collectors in the installation. Supporting the operation of the central heating system in the building during the winter season highly improved the efficiency of the solar collectors. Results show that it is possible to use water without any additives as a solar thermal fluid in a moderate, transitory climate.

A 35,000 ft2 [3,251 m2] Creative Arts instruction building is being constructed on the campus of Haywood Community College in Clyde, NC (∼25 miles [40 km] west of Asheville). The building’s HVAC system consists of a solar absorption chiller, two parallel back-up electric chillers, and radiant floor heating with condensing boiler back-up. Hot water is to be heated by 117 solar thermal panels with thermal energy storage in a 12,000 gallon [45,000 liters] insulated tank and service to both the absorption chiller and the radiant under-floor heating system. Peak cooling loads and unfavorable solar conditions are to be handled by parallel electric chillers, operated in sequence to achieve maximum performance. Emergency radiant under-floor heating hot water back-up is to be handled by gas-fired condensing boilers in the event of unavailable solar heated hot water. This paper will examine the extensive modeling process required of the system as performed in EnergyPlus, how preliminary modeling results influenced the control and design strategy, the annual behavior of the system and the importance of controllability.
