The notion of “space” has acquired a central position in postmodern geography. Its re-emergence in postmodern geography aptly demonstrates the crucial importance of the physical places in moulding human experiences, identity, culture, actions, and existence as well. Space in postmodern geography incorporates into the seminal aspects of the inseparable connection of place with human experiences, existence, and identity as well. These issues of space and place have great importance in the context of the nation of Australia due to the appropriation/misappropriation of the land and the consequent unsettling. All these have become areas of investigation in Australian literature, and here in this context the name of Peter Carey, an eminent Australian novelist in English, poses significance. Carey in his novels has dexterously portrayed the spatial issues in Australia and the continued contestations over the land between the British Whites and the Aboriginals. This article intends to critically appropriate the notion of space and its dialectics in the Australian contexts from a postmodern perspective based on a reading of Carey’s one of the widely read novels namely Illywhacker. The article digs into the continuing spatial dilemma, politics, and contestations in the nation of Australia through illustrations from Illywhacker and eventually demystifies its ramifications and wide impacts.

Literary works are never separated from previous works or other texts. “Aku Dipenogoro!” is a literary work in the form of a drama script written by Landung Simatupang which was inspired by the power of divination by Peter Carey. The process of forming a literary work based on the acceptance of the past works can be said to be a reception. Therefore, this study used a reception approach to see how far the acceptance of previous works in Aku Dipenogoro!. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. In this case, the researcher compares the texts by looking at the similarities and differences. Furthermore, the findings are described. Based on the results of the analysis conducted by Aku Dipenogoro! as a literary work made several changes from the previous work (Peter Carey's Power of Prediction). This chapter offers a wide-ranging and evocative snapshot of literary seashores in the middle of the nineteenth century. Cunningham suggestively links edgeland doings and meanings, their positives and negatives: Victorian Doverianisms in the parenthesis between suicidal Gloucester and gay Auden; what happened at Tenby; natural historical reverence beside the sea; Small Game Hunting with Hammer and Chisel; microscopes and vivaria; depredations and poeticities. Key figures discussed include Philip Henry Gosse, George Eliot, G. H. Lewes (and Peter Carey), Matthew Arnold and Alfred Lord Tennyson.

Abstract:Charles Dickens is probably THE Victorian novelist posterity remembers best, or at least the most, to the extent that he also occasionally appears as a character of fiction. Part of his private life is thus rewritten in Peter Carey’s Jack Maggs (1997) which also dwells on his activity as a writer, pretending to account for the circumstances of the writing of Great Expectations. Dickens has also appeared in Joseph O’Connor’s Star of the Sea (2002), where circumstances for his writing are emphasized too. This paper is thus a modest attempt at assessing these fictional representations of Charles Dickens in today’s novels.Key-words: Charles Dickens, Peter Carey, Joseph O’Connor, rewriting, Postmodern novels, self-refl exivity.
