Professor Tom O’Regan played an important role in the establishment and formalisation of media and cultural studies, especially in Australia and New Zealand. He had a long association with Media International Australia, serving on the journal’s Editorial Board for many years and helping to guide MIA successfully through several key periods of significant change. In this special issue MIA, on behalf of its community of scholars, takes this opportunity to honour Tom, and to remember and celebrate his insightful and innovative work.

Alvin Schorr (1921–2016) had a long and distinguished career fighting poverty on many fronts. His career was essentially identified with public social policy, particularly with the issues surrounding income maintenance. After working for several years in social service agencies, he began a career in policy in the government and academic sectors. He dedicated his life and career to fighting poverty. His personal motto was, “Tikkun Olam,” which refers to repairing the world through acts of social justice and kindness.

William Leonard Stern (1926–2019) had a long and distinguished career as a social worker and member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Over more than five decades, he developed policies, built and managed programs, and provided consultation and evaluation services to a variety of human service organizations, professional associations, and governmental agencies.

Ronald Vernie Dellums, MSW (1935–2018), enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a compassionate social worker, a congressman who campaigned for international peace and disarmament, and an innovative businessman with a focus on healthcare. He served in numerous leadership positions both nationally and internationally. Although essentially thought of as a leader in the defense and foreign policy fields, he also distinguished himself with domestic legislative initiatives.
