A tradução das notas de viagem de Isabelle Eberhardt que apresentamos neste ensaio exigiu pesquisas geográficas, de personagens históricos e de algumas questões de cultura africana. As possíveis dificuldades de compreensão por parte do leitor brasileiro se dão em especial se consideramos que pouco se estuda sobre o continente africano em período de formação escolar e, em certos casos, até mesmo universitária.

The Potential of Travel as Nomadic Practice. The Situated and Embodied Female Subject in Ulla Bjerne’s Novel to dare being...

This article focuses on the novel att våga vara… [to dare being…] (1948) based on the life of the explorer Isabelle Eberhardt (1877–1904), by the Swedish author Ulla Bjerne (1890–1969). Annotations in her diary as well as Eberhardt’s diary and biography, are in addition taken into account, read as examples of female situated embodiment and part of a feminist nomadic practice, as elaborated by Rosi Bradidotti, in Bjerne’s aim to give representation to a new type of woman. It entails resistance to hegemonic, fixed and exclusionary views on feminine subjectivity, the affirmation of movement and the process of becoming, and the construction of new conceptions and images of women. The central hypothesis in the article is that travelling in att våga vara… has a potential to nomadize the female subject both literally and figuratively, in the quest to give representation to a situated, embodied female subjectivity, in both body and word.

“LÂ ILLÂHA ILLA-LLÂH”: THE ISLAM OF ISABELLE EBERHARDT AND RELIGIOUS TRANSFORMATIONS The present paper focuses on the religious quest of Isabelle Eberhardt 1877–1904, a French-language writer and traveller of Russian origins. Influenced by her atheistic education and Romantic writings rebelling against the Christian God, she looks for faith in Islam. This study explains the reasons why she adopted the Muslim religion, shows how she describes Islam and, finally, depicts her doubts and the changes she introduced to the religion to be able to accept it. Her writings are an interesting testimony of religious transformations of her times, but may also be in line with the contemporary post-secular thought.

Le vagabondage ou la flânerie subversive chez Isabelle Eberhardt

Dans les travaux sur Isabelle Eberhardt, on met souvent l’accent sur son nomadisme, sa condamnation de l’Occident et ses relations rapprochées avec les Maghrébins qu’elle a pu connaître lors de son passage sur l’autre rive de la Méditerranée. Cet article propose d’examiner comment le vagabondage d’Eberhardt en tant que pensée et en tant que mode de vie est une subversion se différenciant du concept de la flânerie qui connaît le succès à Paris, dans des cadres bien définis.

El trabajo compara la forma anglosajona de enseñar a narrar un cuento y la manera en que los franceses enseñan a los estudiantes a hablar en público con fluidez para, así, plantear los problemas que existen en la ense- ñanza de la oratoria y la escritura en el contexto español. Se sugieren diferentes aproximaciones a la traducción (siguiendo a Walter Benjamin, Derrida, Ortega y Gasset) y se señalan algunos peligros, bondades y miserias de la traducción. Igualmente se incluyen comentarios sobre diferentes experiencias al traducir ficción norteamericana (T.C. Boyle, Patricia Highsmith, Richard Ford, Rick Moody, Cynthia Ozick) y francesa (Isabelle Eberhardt) y se analiza la experiencia de autotraducir mis propios cuentos al inglés con la ayuda de un escritor americano, descubriendo, así, las razones y los significados inconscientes de cada una de las palabras

Comment la folie vient aux femmes. Personnages de folles dans quelques récits de Maghrébines : d’Isabelle Eberhardt à Leïla Marouane

Isabelle Eberhardt, Leïla Sebbar, Azza Filali, Malika Madi y Leïla Marouane: estas cinco autoras, cuyas relaciones con el Magreb mostraremos, ponen en escena a mujeres locas en varios de sus relatos (cuatro relatos cortos y cuatro novelas). Recopilaremos las descripciones de las manifestaciones de aquella locura y los contextos en los cuales surgen los comportamientos considerados “anormales” por la narr dora y/o los demás protagonistas. A continuación, intentaremos destacar el origen y las causas de dicha locura (o presunta psicosis). De forma general, viene provocada por la violencia contra las chicas y/o las mujeres, bien sea parental, social, masculina o vinculada al contexto geográfico-cultural. La imagen de las mujeres locas, para estas autoras magrebíes, demuestra una exclusión que les impone un sistema patriarcal abusivo y que nos parece específica de cierta literatu a femenina del Magreb.
