Two rivers in the hot desert of northwestern México have been considered as filter barriers in the distribution of mammals: Río Conchos in Chihuahua and Río Nazas in Durango.  Between both rivers, the black-tailed jackrabbit, Lepus californicus, shows significant differences in external morphological traits.  We investigated if these differences are supported by phylogenetical signals and compared them with populations living at similar latitudes in the Baja California Peninsula to determine the importance of the genetic variation caused by the rivers.  An external mophology, and a cranial geometric morphometric analysis were performed using the dorsal, ventral, and lateral views of the skull; and a genetic analysis of cytochrome b gene.  Measurements and fur color patterns of specimens from two continental groups, north of Río Conchos (NRC) and south of Río Nazas (SRN), were compared to four groups (A-D) inhabiting different latitudes of the Baja California Peninsula (BCP).  The parietal region, zygomatic arch, and auditory bullae were identified as the main cranial structures related to skull shape; however, no differences were observed in size and shape between groups.  The phylogenetic reconstruction of L. californicus showed that it is a monophyletic species, with high branch support values (100).  It is represented by two polyphyletic subclades, one with haplotypes of the SRN and NRC populations and the other with haplotypes of the BCP populations.  The average genetic distance (p-distance) and genetic differentiation (FST) between SRN and NRC were low (0.8 % and 0.09, respectively), with higher mean values between the BCP groups (1.23 % and 0.30, respectively).  The statistical parsimony network of Cyt b did not identify a clear geographic genetic structure between haplotypes of SRN and NRC and they did not share haplotypes with the BCP populations.  There are neither cranial geometric morphometric nor genetic differences between L. californicus populations related to either the rios Conchos or Nazas; thus, these rivers cannot be considered geographic barriers.  However, there are morphological differences between the populations in Chihuahua and Durango and the populations inhabiting Baja California Peninsula, which may be associated with evolutionary distance and local habitat characteristics.

Abstract Daily activity is an important aspect of animal behavior and depends both on nutritional and reproductive demands. It also can be modified by—among other factors—interspecific competition, the need to minimize the risk of predation, and human disturbance, such as the presence of cattle. We studied the activity patterns and degree of overlap among carnivores, their potential wild prey, and livestock, in a Biosphere Reserve in the Chihuahuan Desert. There was no temporal segregation among the carnivores. Carnivores synchronized their activity with that of their main prey, the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus). In contrast, we did observe temporal segregation between the puma (Puma concolor), coyote (Canis latrans), and bobcat (Lynx rufus), with mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). There was little activity overlap between predators and livestock (Bos taurus, Equus caballus). However, to avoid conflict resulting from livestock predation we suggest increasing and improving surveillance, and that calves and females close to calving be sheltered. More studies on the multi-niche interactions of livestock and their wild predators are needed to understand daily activity overlap in different seasons, and to better understand the mechanisms of coexistence in protected areas in order to make sound management recommendations to cattle growers and park rangers.

The distribution and abundance of the white-tailed jackrabbit Lepus townsendii have declined significantly since 1950, continuing a trend that began in some regions of its range in the late 1800s. We reviewed museum records and the literature to evaluate the status of the white-tailed jackrabbit in each state and province in its historical range and evaluated possible reasons for its decline. Our evaluation revealed its extirpation or decline throughout much of its range, but its legal or conservation status does generally not reflect this precarious status. We note its extirpation in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, and potential extirpation in British Columbia, Oregon, Illinois, and Wisconsin. We classified the white-tailed jackrabbit to be broadly extirpated in Iowa, Minnesota, Washington, Nebraska and California, and declining with local extirpations in Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and South Dakota. We consider it to be a relict in Ontario, and possibly declining in Alberta, Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Idaho, and Montana. We consider only Manitoba to have a possibly stable population. Determining the reasons for the species' reduced distribution is difficult, as the decline appears to be due to multiple factors, none of which provide a universal explanation. We dismissed road kills, recreational hunting, disease and parasites, and competition with black-tailed jackrabbits Lepus californicus as causes of the widespread population declines and extirpations. We concluded that habitat alterations and climate change are overriding factors, and that past depredation measures and increased predator populations have likely contributed to the decline. These hypotheses require further testing. We recommend more research on the distribution, abundance, ecology, and population dynamics of white-tailed jackrabbits, and management that includes a frank appraisal of the species' status, the potential for grassland restoration, and programs to reintroduce populations into prairie preserves and restored grasslands.
