Cenozoic basalt, which is widespread in Mongolia, has been attracting the attention of Central Asian researchers since the beginning of the last century. This study identified the geomorphological shape of the Khorgo volcano. The main purpose of the study is to determine the origin and morphological form of Khorgo volcano, a key representative of Cenozoic volcanism. In general, there are several types of morphological forms associated with lava overflow, and it is important to determine which types are the most common and also to establish a link between them. Geomorphological studies in this area have not been conducted in Mongolia. Spatial improvement and morphometric methods satellite imagery had identified Khorgo volcanic faults.Khangai magmatism had thinned its crust to 45 km during the Tariat-Chuluut volcanic activity. It can be concluded that this was due to the thinning of the continental crust in the Khangai Mountains because of mantle plume. During this time, tectonic faults formed were formed, which had broken through the earth's crust. Part of this fault was formed in the vicinity of Khorgo Mountain from northwest to southeast, and lava flowed with the basic composition, which led to the formation of the current morphological form of Khorgo volcano. The lava flow was less than 45% silica and potassium-dominated, which blocked the Suman River valley and formed the present-day Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. The morphometric analysis compared the morphology of a typical volcano, which showed that the mouth of the crater of the Khorgo volcano has a slope slanting about 45 degrees, it is about 100 meters in depth, with a diameter of about 500 meters. By comparing the basalt composition of the Khorgo volcano and its morphometric characteristics with other standard volcanoes, it has been determined that it is in the form of a lava dome.

Abstract Cenozoic basalt regions contain various natural resources that can be used for socio-economic development. Different quantitative and qualitative methods have been applied to understand the geological and geomorphological characteristics of basalt formations. Nowadays the integration of remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) has become a powerful method to distinguish geological formations. In this paper, authors combined satellite and fieldwork data to analyze the structure and morphology of highland geological formations in order to distinguish two main volcanic eruption episodes. Based on remote sensing analysis in this study, different spectral band ratios were generated to select the best one for basalt classification. Lastly, two spectral combinations (including band ratios 4/3, 6/2, 7/4 in Landsat 8 and 3/2, 5/1, 7/3 in Landsat 7) were chosen for the Maximum Likelihood classification. The final geological map based on the integration of Landsat 7 and 8 outcomes shows precisely the boundary of the basalt formations with the accuracy up to 93.7%. This outcome contributed significantly to the correction of geological maps. In further studies, authors suggest the integration of Landsat 7 and 8 data in geological studies and natural resource and environmental management at both local and regional scales.

Microbial corrosion textures in volcanic glass from Cenozoic seafloor basalts and the corresponding titanite replacement microtextures in metamorphosed Paleoarchean pillow lavas have been interpreted as evidence for a deep biosphere dating back in time through the earliest periods of preserved life on earth. This interpretation has been recently challenged for Paleoarchean titanite replacement textures based on textural and geochronological data from pillow lavas in the Hooggenoeg Complex of the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa. We use this controversy to explore the strengths and weaknesses of arguments made in support or rejection of the biogenicity interpretation of bioalteration trace fossils in Cenozoic basalt glasses and their putative equivalents in Paleoarchean greenstones. Our analysis suggests that biogenicity cannot be taken for granted for all titanite-based textures in metamorphosed basalt glass, but a cautious and critical evaluation of evidence suggests that biogenicity remains the most likely interpretation for previously described titanite microtextures in Paleoarchean pillow lavas.
