Ocular medical devices (MDs) represent a very wide and promising field of human ophthalmology. In preclinical studies evaluating the safety and/or performance of these ocular MDs, the choice of histologic technique and the focus of the histopathologic evaluation method should take into consideration the following aspects: the specific guidelines possibly associated with the MD or combination product, the ocular compartment in contact with the MD and its specificities, and last the nature of the biomaterial used in the MD. Following a brief overview of animal models, this short review will present the different types of ocular MDs and will present the specificities of the histologic technique and the histopathologic evaluation related to ocular MDs.

The article presents the method of computer animation visualisation of the structure of the duodenal walls in histological study, and describes instructions for its application in details. The advantages of the developed method as compared to the existing trivial histologic technique have been noted. The article gives the results of the application of the given method during the study of the features of the histological structure of the duodenal wall in newborns.

The rate of progression of the demineralization front during acid demineralization is investigated for standardized elephant's ivory dentine specimens. A theoretical model for the penetration based upon a combined diffusion with reaction process is set up. It is demonstrated that the results are in accordance with the proposed model. For specimens of certain geometrical shapes (semi-infinite or plane sheet) the distance penetrated by the front is directly proportional to the square root of the time.

A freeze-dry autoradiographic technique is presented as a model for the microscopic localization of carcinogens in the lung following intratracheal injection or inhalation exposure. This totally nonliquid histologic technique minimizes carcinogen diffusion or translocation which could occur during standard tissue processing.
