By a Morse function on a compact manifold with boundary we mean a real-valued function without critical points near the boundary such that its critical points as well as the critical points of its restriction to the boundary are all nondegenerate. For such Morse functions, Saeki and Yamamoto have previously defined a certain notion of cusp cobordism, and computed the unoriented cusp cobordism group of Morse functions on surfaces. In this paper, we compute unoriented and oriented cusp cobordism groups of Morse functions on manifolds of any dimension by employing Levine’s cusp elimination technique as well as the complementary process of creating pairs of cusps along fold lines. We show that both groups are cyclic of order two in even dimensions, and cyclic of infinite order in odd dimensions. For Morse functions on surfaces our result yields an explicit description of Saeki–Yamamoto’s cobordism invariant which they constructed by means of the cohomology of the universal complex of singular fibers.

Let [Formula: see text] be a (holomorphic) Lagrangian fibration that is very general in the moduli space of Lagrangian fibrations. We conjecture that the singular fibers in codimension one must be semistable degenerations of abelian varieties. We prove a partial result towards this conjecture, and describe an example that provides further evidence.

Abstract Folding of ADE-Dynkin diagrams according to graph automorphisms yields irreducible Dynkin diagrams of $\textrm{ABCDEFG}$-types. This folding procedure allows to trace back the properties of the corresponding simple Lie algebras or groups to those of $\textrm{ADE}$-type. In this article, we implement the techniques of folding by graph automorphisms for Hitchin integrable systems. We show that the fixed point loci of these automorphisms are isomorphic as algebraic integrable systems to the Hitchin systems of the folded groups away from singular fibers. The latter Hitchin systems are isomorphic to the intermediate Jacobian fibrations of Calabi–Yau orbifold stacks constructed by the 1st author. We construct simultaneous crepant resolutions of the associated singular quasi-projective Calabi–Yau three-folds and compare the resulting intermediate Jacobian fibrations to the corresponding Hitchin systems.

Abstract Compactifications of the heterotic string on Td are the simplest, yet rich enough playgrounds to uncover swampland ideas: the U(1)d+16 left-moving gauge symmetry gets enhanced at special points in moduli space only to certain groups. We state criteria, based on lattice embedding techniques, to establish whether a gauge group is realized or not. For generic d, we further show how to obtain the moduli that lead to a given gauge group by modifying the method of deleting nodes in the extended Dynkin diagram of the Narain lattice II1,17. More general algorithms to explore the moduli space are also developed. For d = 1 and 2 we list all the maximally enhanced gauge groups, moduli, and other relevant information about the embedding in IId,d+16. In agreement with the duality between heterotic on T2 and F-theory on K3, all possible gauge groups on T2 match all possible ADE types of singular fibers of elliptic K3 surfaces. We also present a simple method to transform the moduli under the duality group, and we build the map that relates the charge lattices and moduli of the compactification of the E8 × E8 and Spin(32)/ℤ2 heterotic theories.

Abstract We show that Norbury’s McShane identity for nonorientable cusped hyperbolic surfaces $N$ generalizes to quasifuchsian representations of $\pi _1(N)$ as well as pseudo-Anosov mapping Klein bottles with singular fibers given by $N$.

The fundamental group π 1 ( L ) of a knot or link L may be used to generate magic states appropriate for performing universal quantum computation and simultaneously for retrieving complete information about the processed quantum states. In this paper, one defines braids whose closure is the L of such a quantum computer model and computes their braid-induced Seifert surfaces and the corresponding Alexander polynomial. In particular, some d-fold coverings of the trefoil knot, with d = 3 , 4, 6, or 12, define appropriate links L, and the latter two cases connect to the Dynkin diagrams of E 6 and D 4 , respectively. In this new context, one finds that this correspondence continues with Kodaira’s classification of elliptic singular fibers. The Seifert fibered toroidal manifold Σ ′ , at the boundary of the singular fiber E 8 ˜ , allows possible models of quantum computing.
