Abstract In this paper, we classify the compact locally homogeneous non-gradient m-quasi Einstein 3- manifolds. Along the way, we also prove that given a compact quotient of a Lie group of any dimension that is m-quasi Einstein, the potential vector field X must be left invariant and Killing. We also classify the nontrivial m-quasi Einstein metrics that are a compact quotient of the product of two Einstein metrics. We also show that S1 is the only compact manifold of any dimension which admits a metric which is nontrivially m-quasi Einstein and Einstein.

AbstractLet $$f:M\rightarrow M$$ f : M → M be a self-map of a compact manifold and $$n\in {\mathbb {N}}$$ n ∈ N . In general, the least number of n-periodic points in the smooth homotopy class of f may be much bigger than in the continuous homotopy class. For a class of spaces, including compact Lie groups, a necessary condition for the equality of the above two numbers, for each iteration $$f^n$$ f n , appears. Here we give the explicit form of the graph of orbits of Reidemeister classes $$\mathcal {GOR}(f^*)$$ GOR ( f ∗ ) for self-maps of projective unitary group PSU(2) and of $$PSU(2)\times PSU(2)$$ P S U ( 2 ) × P S U ( 2 ) satisfying the necessary condition. The structure of the graphs implies that for self-maps of the above spaces the necessary condition is also sufficient for the smooth minimal realization of n-periodic points for all iterations.

By a Morse function on a compact manifold with boundary we mean a real-valued function without critical points near the boundary such that its critical points as well as the critical points of its restriction to the boundary are all nondegenerate. For such Morse functions, Saeki and Yamamoto have previously defined a certain notion of cusp cobordism, and computed the unoriented cusp cobordism group of Morse functions on surfaces. In this paper, we compute unoriented and oriented cusp cobordism groups of Morse functions on manifolds of any dimension by employing Levine’s cusp elimination technique as well as the complementary process of creating pairs of cusps along fold lines. We show that both groups are cyclic of order two in even dimensions, and cyclic of infinite order in odd dimensions. For Morse functions on surfaces our result yields an explicit description of Saeki–Yamamoto’s cobordism invariant which they constructed by means of the cohomology of the universal complex of singular fibers.

AbstractIf $U:[0,+\infty [\times M$ U : [ 0 , + ∞ [ × M is a uniformly continuous viscosity solution of the evolution Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$ \partial _{t}U+ H(x,\partial _{x}U)=0, $$ ∂ t U + H ( x , ∂ x U ) = 0 , where $M$ M is a not necessarily compact manifold, and $H$ H is a Tonelli Hamiltonian, we prove the set $\Sigma (U)$ Σ ( U ) , of points in $]0,+\infty [\times M$ ] 0 , + ∞ [ × M where $U$ U is not differentiable, is locally contractible. Moreover, we study the homotopy type of $\Sigma (U)$ Σ ( U ) . We also give an application to the singularities of the distance function to a closed subset of a complete Riemannian manifold.

AbstractWe consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated to a strictly elliptic operator on the space $$\mathrm {C}(\partial M)$$ C ( ∂ M ) of continuous functions on the boundary $$\partial M$$ ∂ M of a compact manifold $$\overline{M}$$ M ¯ with boundary. We prove that it generates an analytic semigroup of angle $$\frac{\pi }{2}$$ π 2 , generalizing and improving a result of Escher with a new proof. Combined with the abstract theory of operators with Wentzell boundary conditions developed by Engel and the author, this yields that the corresponding strictly elliptic operator with Wentzell boundary conditions generates a compact and analytic semigroups of angle $$\frac{\pi }{2}$$ π 2 on the space $$\mathrm {C}(\overline{M})$$ C ( M ¯ ) .

Abstract We show that any simply connected topological closed $4$-manifold punctured along any compact, totally disconnected tame subset $\Lambda $ admits a continuum of smoothings, which are not diffeomorphic to any leaf of a $C^{1,0}$ codimension one foliation on a compact manifold. This includes the remarkable case of $S^4$ punctured along a tame Cantor set. This is the lowest reasonable regularity for this realization problem. These results come from a new criterion for nonleaves in $C^{1,0}$ regularity. We also include a new criterion for nonleaves in the $C^2$-category. Some of our smooth nonleaves are “exotic”, that is, homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to leaves of codimension one foliations on a compact manifold, being the 1st examples in this class.

Abstract Let f be a $C^2$ diffeomorphism on a compact manifold. Ledrappier and Young introduced entropies along unstable foliations for an ergodic measure $\mu $ . We relate those entropies to covering numbers in order to give a new upper bound on the metric entropy of $\mu $ in terms of Lyapunov exponents and topological entropy or volume growth of sub-manifolds. We also discuss extensions to the $C^{1+\alpha },\,\alpha>0$ , case.
