AbstractThis paper provides a well-posedness analysis for a hemivariational inequality of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations by arguments of convex minimization and the Banach fixed point. The hemivariational inequality describes a stationary incompressible fluid flow subject to a nonslip boundary condition and a Clarke subdifferential relation between the total pressure and the normal component of the velocity. Auxiliary Stokes hemivariational inequalities that are useful in proving the solution existence and uniqueness of the Navier–Stokes hemivariational inequality are introduced and analyzed. This treatment naturally leads to a convergent iteration method for solving the Navier–Stokes hemivariational inequality through a sequence of Stokes hemivariational inequalities. Equivalent minimization principles are presented for the auxiliary Stokes hemivariational inequalities which will be useful in developing numerical algorithms.

One of the most intriguing issues in the mathematical theory of the stationary Navier–Stokes equations is the regularity of weak solutions. This problem has been deeply investigated for homogeneous fluids. In this paper, the regularity of the solutions in the case of not constant viscosity is analyzed. Precisely, it is proved that for a bounded domain Ω⊂R2, a weak solution u∈W1,q(Ω) is locally Hölder continuous if q=2, and Hölder continuous around x, if q∈(1,2) and |μ(x)−μ0| is suitably small, with μ0 positive constant; an analogous result holds true for a bounded domain Ω⊂Rn(n>2) and weak solutions in W1,n/2(Ω).

AbstractWe are concerned with the non-stationary Navier–Stokes equations on the whole plane with external forces which are non-decaying in time, and give a sufficient condition on the external forces for the existence of a solution which exists for whole time. Typical examples are time-periodic solutions and solutions almost periodic in time. The stability under perturbation is also verified.

The nonhomogeneous boundary value problem for the stationary NavierStokes equations in 2D symmetric multiply connected domain with a cusp point on the boundary is studied. It is assumed that there is a source or sink in the cusp point. A symmetric solenoidal extension of the boundary value satisfying the LerayHopf inequality is constructed. Using this extension, the nonhomogeneous boundary value problem is reduced to homogeneous one and the existence of at least one weak symmetric solution is proved. No restrictions are assumed on the size of fluxes of the boundary value.
