AbstractThe circumcentered-reflection method (CRM) has been applied for solving convex feasibility problems. CRM iterates by computing a circumcenter upon a composition of reflections with respect to convex sets. Since reflections are based on exact projections, their computation might be costly. In this regard, we introduce the circumcentered approximate-reflection method (CARM), whose reflections rely on outer-approximate projections. The appeal of CARM is that, in rather general situations, the approximate projections we employ are available under low computational cost. We derive convergence of CARM and linear convergence under an error bound condition. We also present successful theoretical and numerical comparisons of CARM to the original CRM, to the classical method of alternating projections (MAP), and to a correspondent outer-approximate version of MAP, referred to as MAAP. Along with our results and numerical experiments, we present a couple of illustrative examples.

AbstractMany iterative optimization algorithms involve compositions of special cases of Lipschitz continuous operators, namely firmly nonexpansive, averaged, and nonexpansive operators. The structure and properties of the compositions are of particular importance in the proofs of convergence of such algorithms. In this paper, we systematically study the compositions of further special cases of Lipschitz continuous operators. Applications of our results include compositions of scaled conically nonexpansive mappings, as well as the Douglas–Rachford and forward–backward operators, when applied to solve certain structured monotone inclusion and optimization problems. Several examples illustrate and tighten our conclusions.

AbstractIn 1990, Romero presented a beautiful formula for the projection onto the set of rectangular matrices with prescribed row and column sums. Variants of Romero’s formula were rediscovered by Khoury and by Glunt, Hayden, and Reams for bistochastic (square) matrices in 1998. These results have found various generalizations and applications.In this paper, we provide a formula for the more general problem of finding the projection onto the set of rectangular matrices with prescribed scaled row and column sums. Our approach is based on computing the Moore–Penrose inverse of a certain linear operator associated with the problem. In fact, our analysis holds even for Hilbert–Schmidt operators, and we do not have to assume consistency. We also perform numerical experiments featuring the new projection operator.

AbstractThis paper provides a well-posedness analysis for a hemivariational inequality of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations by arguments of convex minimization and the Banach fixed point. The hemivariational inequality describes a stationary incompressible fluid flow subject to a nonslip boundary condition and a Clarke subdifferential relation between the total pressure and the normal component of the velocity. Auxiliary Stokes hemivariational inequalities that are useful in proving the solution existence and uniqueness of the Navier–Stokes hemivariational inequality are introduced and analyzed. This treatment naturally leads to a convergent iteration method for solving the Navier–Stokes hemivariational inequality through a sequence of Stokes hemivariational inequalities. Equivalent minimization principles are presented for the auxiliary Stokes hemivariational inequalities which will be useful in developing numerical algorithms.

AbstractThis paper is devoted to numerical analysis of doubly-history dependent variational inequalities in contact mechanics. A fully discrete method is introduced for the variational inequalities, in which the doubly-history dependent operator is approximated by repeated left endpoint rule and the spatial variable is approximated by the linear element method. An optimal order error estimate is derived under appropriate solution regularities, and numerical examples illustrate the convergence orders of the method.

AbstractInverse problems consist of recovering a signal from a collection of noisy measurements. These problems can often be cast as feasibility problems; however, additional regularization is typically necessary to ensure accurate and stable recovery with respect to data perturbations. Hand-chosen analytic regularization can yield desirable theoretical guarantees, but such approaches have limited effectiveness recovering signals due to their inability to leverage large amounts of available data. To this end, this work fuses data-driven regularization and convex feasibility in a theoretically sound manner. This is accomplished using feasibility-based fixed point networks (F-FPNs). Each F-FPN defines a collection of nonexpansive operators, each of which is the composition of a projection-based operator and a data-driven regularization operator. Fixed point iteration is used to compute fixed points of these operators, and weights of the operators are tuned so that the fixed points closely represent available data. Numerical examples demonstrate performance increases by F-FPNs when compared to standard TV-based recovery methods for CT reconstruction and a comparable neural network based on algorithm unrolling. AbstractBy the first welfare theorem, competitive market equilibria belong to the core and hence are Pareto optimal. Letting money be a commodity, this paper turns these two inclusions around. More precisely, by generalizing the second welfare theorem we show that the said solutions may coincide as a common fixed point for one and the same system.Mathematical arguments invoke conjugation, convolution, and generalized gradients. Convexity is merely needed via subdifferentiablity of aggregate “cost”, and at one point only.Economic arguments hinge on idealized market mechanisms. Construed as algorithms, each stops, and a steady state prevails if and only if price-taking markets clear and value added is nil.

AbstractWe study the Stokes problem for the incompressible fluid with mixed nonlinear boundary conditions of subdifferential type. The latter involve a unilateral boundary condition, the Navier slip condition, a nonmonotone version of the nonlinear Navier–Fujita slip condition, and the threshold slip and leak condition of frictional type. The weak form of the problem leads to a new class of variational–hemivariational inequalities on convex sets for the velocity field. Solution existence and the weak compactness of the solution set to the inequality problem are established based on the Schauder fixed point theorem.

AbstractIn this paper, we introduce a new iterative forward-backward splitting method with an error for solving the variational inclusion problem of the sum of two monotone operators in real Hilbert spaces. We suggest and analyze this method under some mild appropriate conditions imposed on the parameters such that another strong convergence theorem for these problem is obtained. We also apply our main result to improve the fast iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm (IFISTA) with an error for solving the image deblurring problem. Finally, we provide numerical experiments to illustrate the convergence behavior and show the effectiveness of the sequence constructed by the inertial technique to the fast processing with high performance and the fast convergence with good performance of IFISTA.

AbstractIn a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ H , we study a dynamic inertial Newton method which aims to solve additively structured monotone equations involving the sum of potential and nonpotential terms. Precisely, we are looking for the zeros of an operator $A= \nabla f +B $ A = ∇ f + B , where ∇f is the gradient of a continuously differentiable convex function f and B is a nonpotential monotone and cocoercive operator. Besides a viscous friction term, the dynamic involves geometric damping terms which are controlled respectively by the Hessian of the potential f and by a Newton-type correction term attached to B. Based on a fixed point argument, we show the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem. Then we show the weak convergence as $t\to +\infty $ t → + ∞ of the generated trajectories towards the zeros of $\nabla f +B$ ∇ f + B . The convergence analysis is based on the appropriate setting of the viscous and geometric damping parameters. The introduction of these geometric dampings makes it possible to control and attenuate the known oscillations for the viscous damping of inertial methods. Rewriting the second-order evolution equation as a first-order dynamical system enables us to extend the convergence analysis to nonsmooth convex potentials. These results open the door to the design of new first-order accelerated algorithms in optimization taking into account the specific properties of potential and nonpotential terms. The proofs and techniques are original and differ from the classical ones due to the presence of the nonpotential term.
