Abstract An electric field propagating along a non-planar path can acquire geometric phases. Previously, geometric phases have been linked to spin redirection and independently to spatial mode transformation, resulting in the rotation of polarisation and intensity profiles, respectively. We investigate the non-planar propagation of scalar and vector light fields and demonstrate that polarisation and intensity profiles rotate by the same angle. The geometric phase acquired is proportional to j = ℓ + σ, where ℓ is the topological charge and σ is the helicity. Radial and azimuthally polarised beams with j = 0 are eigenmodes of the system and are not affected by the geometric path. The effects considered here are relevant for systems relying on photonic spin Hall effects, polarisation and vector microscopy, as well as topological optics in communication systems.

Photon-induced reactions, like meson photoproduction, allow to excite the nucleon, to have access to many different polarisation observables and are an essential tool to disentangle the role of the different electromagnetic multipoles due to the change of sign of some contributions and the presence of interference terms between different multipole amplitudes. In addition, the use of polarised beams and/or targets allow to access additional observables which are fundamental in order to accurately determine the nucleon resonance properties. The A2@MAMI collaboration is carrying out a broad and systematic study on this topics, both on the proton and the neutron. The experiments are performed at the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, using circularly and linearly polarised photons on longitudinally polarised proton and deuteron targets, for energies ranging from the pion production threshold up to 1.6 GeV. Hadronic reaction products are then measured with the large acceptance Crystal Ball spectrometer, complemented by charged particle and vertex detectors for tracking and identification. An overview of the results obtained so far for the double polarisation observable E (circularly polarised photon beam on a longitudinally polarised target) on the single π0 photoproduction off the proton and the neutron will be given. Furthermore, new results on the helicity-dependent total and differential cross sections on the deuteron will be presented.

Abstract The signals of the $$SO(5)\times U(1)$$SO(5)×U(1) gauge-Higgs unification model at the International Linear Collider are studied. In this model, Kaluza–Klein modes of the neutral gauge bosons affect fermion pair productions. The deviations of the forward–backward asymmetries of the $$e^+e^-\rightarrow \bar{b}b$$e+e-→b¯b, $$\bar{t}t$$t¯t processes from the standard model predictions are clearly seen by using polarised beams. The deviations of these values are predicted for two cases, the bulk mass parameters of quarks are positive and negative case.

The study of the properties of the baryon resonances gives essential constraints on models for nucleon structure. Pion-photoproduction is a powerful tool to excite the nucleon to an intermediate resonant state and, in combination with polarised beams/targets, plays an important role in the investigation of the nucleon resonances. Data for polarisation observables accessible using a polarised photon beam and/or polarised nucleon targets are scarce in many channels, especially in those involving a neutron target. A systematic measurement is performed at the Mainz facility by the A2@MAMI collaboration. This talk will focus on the experiment performed at the Mainz Microtron, using a circularly polarised photon beam and a longitudinally polarised deuteron target, in conjunction with the large acceptance Crystal Ball/TAPS detection setup. An overview of the status of the experiment will be given, together with the preliminary results of polarised cross section from deuteron and of the double polarization observable E for the single π0 photoproduction reaction from the quasi-free proton and quasi-free neutron.
